Arma\'s WIP - Chaos Beastman

Man it feels like forever since I posted - sorry for my absence, training and work got in the way but I finally got some painting done.

There\'s a comp at my local miniature store (in Osaka, Japan of all places!) to paint a general for an army you don\'t already have.

I chose Be\'lakor then realised I don\'t have time to paint him in time for the 18th Nov, so I switched to a beast lord :)

Here\'s the base WIP:

Here we see a piece of shaped polystyrene with a piece of foamboard on top for support of the figure. I use the Liquitex modelling paste for the first time too (I had no clue how to use it but assumed it would be like pre mixed plaster of paris, which it turned out to be.. kinda).

I didn\'t get a shot of it post application but I applied it randomly with a palette knife, let it set a little then just moved and proded it around with a bit of foamboard I was gonna bin to give it some roughness.

Incidently you can buy these modelling pastes with sand etc in them - nice :)

I applied sand around the edge with PVA glue, then applied a watered down PVA layer over the top to hold the sand in place.

On to painting:

Ok, so I sprayed it black with GW\'s Black Primer, let that dry for a day then started painting.

step 1) paint thinned down chaos black into any areas that weren\'t hit with the undercoar

step 2) mix equal parts of scorched brown, chaos black and fortress grey, thin slightly and apply all over the rock.

step 3) add skull white to the mix, dry brush heavy.

step 4) more white, lighter drybrush

step 5) more white (slightly off white now) very light brush on some areas

sand areas:

Just like GW:

step 1) painted completely with a thinned down scorched brown, make sure it\'s a good even layer

step 2) dry brush heavy with dark flesh

step 3) dry brush with bestial brown

step 4) dry brush with bubonic brown

step 5) light dry brush on some areas and the larger rocks.

Static Grass

tip: Shake the stuff in a plastic container to give it a good charge.

step 1) splotch PVA in areas you want to apply the the grass - I used tweezers to apply it to keep it tidy and save the grass.

step 2) shake off any excess and re-apply if any PVA areas still show!

You\'re done!

I might shade down a little more with black/brown mix or break the grey down with a VERY thin catachan green. It\'s looking good though!

What do you suggest? light brown dry brush? some people suggest a yellow ochre dry brush, anyone have any specific colours / techniques they use?

Cheers!

I\'m still working on this - I\'ll get some WIP shots of the Beastlord tomorrow. I\'ve not been painting long and I really feel like I\'m learning again...

Short abscenes really make you lose touch with the skills/techniques eh? :)

I had a make a smaller version of the base here to make sure the mini fitted into a rank group. Peh.. I doesn\'t look quite as nice as this one either :(
