Army of the Dead (Silver at GDLA)

Hello folks, I finally got my pictures up of the army of the dead. My other winning entries can already be seen in my gallery.

How did you paint the cloth and the skin?

For these models I used GW paints. I made a few custom colors in mixing pots, here\'s the recipes:

Dark Brown: Scorched Brown/Chaos Black
Green Brown: Dark Brown mix plus Catachan Green.
Jade green: Snot Green/White

For the cloth I began with the dark brown basecoat, and highlighted to green brown. I then kept adding in Elf Grey (This is an old color, space wolves grey is close). And finally finished with white. Glazed the jade green in the cracks.

For the skin I began with dark brown, and kept adding in the foundation paint Tallarn Flesh for highlights. When this mix was about 50/50 I added in Elf Grey for highlights, followed by pure white. Then did jade green glazes.

The king\'s cloak was painted with a basecoat of dark brown. I kept adding in Scab Red for each highlight. Then I started adding in Desert Yellow for further highlights. Finished with some light glazing of jade green.

The darker parts of the cloth on the guy with the spear were painted with dark brown, and added in Rotting Flesh for each highlight, followed by final highlights of Elf Grey and white.

I really like these...and the greenish effect is just awesome. Its a really cool effect. I kind of wish there was more of it actually. Great job.

I may end up painting a few more in the group, so I can try out putting more green on the next ones. Maybe I can try some effect where they are coming out of their cave and the greener ones are in the sunlight. There\'s an idea...

Yeah, both LOTR categories were pretty insane. There were a bunch of really great entries. I think it was the best GDLA yet!

Excellent work. You did a fantastic job broadening the pallete on these guys, while keeping the tone ghostly. I think it\'s tougher to do these figures \"right\" than people might expect. Congrats.
