In a way, I think this might be the key phrase. I know a lot of people paint the mini and base separately, but I think you have to think of it as two parts of a single whole. A miniature painted with a particular base in mind, or a miniature based ahead of time and both painted together, may look better than both done separately... Just a thought.
I love basing and think it sets models off well......I\'m with Generulepoleaxe I can spend longer doing a base than a mini and I actually find it more rewarding most of the time as it\'s where you are making something completely unique from scratch... It\'s pretty simple to get the hang of it just think where you want the model to be set and go from there..
GP\'s bases rock and hes always experimenting...
Dragonforge (Jeff) does awesome bases particularly 40K cracking.
try using natural materials like slate.. a simple little bit of slate sunk in a little bit of greenstuff can make all the difference...
and when it comes to painting don\'t think of it as a chore and become formulaic with colours.. experiment..even plain gravel can look great with the right washes and colours mixed in....
like everything in this fine hobby start simple take your time and ask anytime
rackham\'s display models are all on solid black bases, and it looks awesome...yet, they are the only ones that i can imagine without decoration on the base...
there is some wierd psychological thing goin\' on here...i find it hard to imagine a mini bein\' finished without some kinda decoration, even if it\'s just painted dirt, but i don\'t miss it when i look at the rackham studio minis...
