Yeah it can be a bit of a bugger - best bet is to base coat with a sand/brown colour and then go up to yellow.

Yeah, underpaint in something else that covers better, then go over it with yellow - white through to a flesh colour, sand or beige in the shadows can work nicely.

white primer, airbrush the crap out of it is what works for me. with a brush i would be there all day trying to get it smooth.

I'm doing a lot of yellow at the moment,
I'm using iyanden as the base. devlan mud/sepia wash
sunburst and bleached bone mix for the next layer. why? because the bone gives the yellow better covering power.
pure sunburst to bring out strong yellow.
yellow and white mix for highlights.

Thanks for the tips. I hope they can help others who use yellow. I was told to base with orange and then build up with yellow. It looks good. But I am always open to new ideas.

Now I am reminded why I had such respect for people who played fully painted Imperial Fist armies.:D
