Just a mention you said you want to go into advertising?if so would illustration be the best idea?

Unless you were to have a portfolio that showed you are proficient with all software it may limit you.

illustration is not just pencil and paper work. Infact, alot of it now is done, concept on paper, rendered on the computer, then colored on the computer as well. Still illustration though
