I think you gave it away in your second sentence, just use spary paints. GW makes some great primers, and you don't have to worry about it being uneven. You spend money in the hobby, 8 bucks ain't going to kill ya.

good method on a budget, but I have an easier method ( even if it is slightly more expensive. use GW primer. lightly spray skull white on twice, wash with chaos black ( once the wihte is dry of course). this nicely defines all area, and with a bit of practise, the colour doesn't look very cartoony, but realistic, and still shows up well on the photos i've just takesn

In the past I have used a gray spray primer. Lately I have used gray brush on primer.
I think it's just a preference actually.
Some folks near me use "stained glass medium" from the hobby shop as a primer. It doesn't obscure any detail because it's clear, and if you want to bring out the definition, you can add a drop of black ink before priming.

nice article! i would agree that grey is best as a u/c, and futher, that apling by hand is the best method for a display painter. in elder days when i was, i would not undercoat the whole model-only the area i was painting. once done completely, i'd u/c the next area and continue painting. a friend who was a multi GD winner taught this tech' to me.
well done PSI! nice read.==timo

Not a bad idea, but as someone else said, using a grey spray primer is just easier. I used the Tamya grey spray once, and it's rather good ; I think the color you use for primer depends mostly on the colors you will use on your mini and the way you like to paint. For instance, you'll use white primer if you want to have brigh colors, don't like dry brushing and prefer wet blending..or just if you want to paint your mini in yellow (those who have try to paint yellow over black primer still are screaming in pain).
If you have a knight in armor and don't like the trendy NMM style, go for black primer. Anyway, go for black if your mini has mor metal than clothes.

OK idea :)
And good reply from Skycaptain too :)

A thing I've found works good too is using something like a black ink for primer - looks really good on minis with much armour or dark robes.
Another thing I can really recomend is Vallejros sprays - they're way better than GW's, IMHO, and they come in black, white and grey (those are the colours I know of - might be more). It covers better than GW, and the paint aren't as thick, so it'll last longer.

Works on a white undercoat too, and it works great! If you don't paint your minis, at the very least do this!

These days the krylon spray primer is less than a third the price of a can of GW primer and seems a finer grain. I would head that direction. It comes in white, gray, black, and brown.
