Very simple, very effective, very nice. A truely realistic effect. Put this with a demonic mini for a real "Bling".

Thanks everyone. And to think I wasnt sure about this.
I think there is a general lack of quick and simple tutorials at a time when there seems to be a lot of new mid-range painters visiting cmon.
Next, NMM for beginners.

To take this technique to the next level and really make the lava glow, use fluorescent yellow, orange and red instead of standard hobby colors.

The "reverse drybrush" (light to dark) paint sequence is
white primer
fluorescent yellow
fluorescent orange
fluorescent red
normal red
dark red
dark gray
black

This is the first piece I ever did using this technique: http://www.armorcast.com/terraform/picture/461l.jpg

Photo ain't great and does not really show how well it glows, but Steve Jackson picked it up at a GAMA show, looking for the light source underneath....

Tim, that would not be in keeping with the "simpleness" idea of the article. Also if you want it to "glow" more than this you would need a bleeding bulb underneath. Its the lack of layers and the big contrast in colour that tricks the eye you see.Let the secret out now.:)

I agree with the others that the simplicity of the tutorial is great and should yield a great base. As I paint more and more I find that the best way to make a figure pop is the base, and this technique will be a great help. Thanks a lot and I look forward to many more tips.

Very helpful! I'll be sure to try this! Let's see more of this kind of simplicity in all tutorials! Great job Klute!
