"Maintain a painting journal" - and/or a blog! I find that guilt about the frequency of my blog posts motivates me to paint

Few other points:
1. Read an watch tutorials. Seeing how a very good painter paints can change your perseption on how something is done (blending for example). I recommend Jeremie Bonamant's DVD. It really opened my eyes.
2. Don't be afraid of trying "difficult" or "advanced" techniques. If you never try anything hard, you'll never be good. It's likely it's not that hard as you imagine.
