Article: Painting Metallics

The pics look nice, but the explanation is lacking. I've read better descriptions online of Jakob Rune Nielson's technique and you have barely hit the surface of how to do metallics using ink washes. I do applaud you for your efforts, though.

Pretty good article. The successive wash idea is definitely one that works well for using metallic paints. You might try adding a little Future Mix (20% Future, 80% distilled water) to thin your inks rather than plain water. That will help reduce the "tide marks." Nice job on the orc, too!

Stresingj... he's not Jakob NielsEn.. and JRNs techniques are something for highly skilled people.. Avicenne wrote this and everyone can read, understand and most likely do this.

I think it's a good tutorial, very well written and explained ;)

Thanks for a great article! I've wondered about how to do this properly for ages... If you ever get the chance to update it, could you include examples of bright steel or copper? I'd love to see your take on those.

I dont Hate NMM I do appreciate the way it looks, howeve,r its not for everyone, I've got a friends who's been a "profesional" (read starving) rtist for about 10 year,s and when I aksed him to help me with NMM he said it was to complex for him *L* the other extreme was plain "slathering on" of metalic paint. this seems to give a really nice "in-between" the two extremes, and looks EXCELENT

gret idea
great writting
well done photos
way COOL end result
a definate 10

*laugh* I dont hate NMM, just in case NMM fans start sniping me. It is a fantastic technique that I do use occasionally, but i find it doesnt suit my style so well. Currently I tend to try and paint in a naturalistic way, and the smooth blending of NMM just doesnt look quite right. I do keep trying to make sure i dont lose my touch, and do take on NMM commissions - its just not my preferred style at the moment.

It's very nice, Most of the time i don't really know how to paint Metallics well, so i just paint them NMM, but now, i want to try MM again, and this is very helpfull. I don't like inks though...

Ghafassa - NMM = Non Metallic Method, and it's a way of painting metallic surfaces without actually using metallic paints
