Very well done article. This is the same technique I use for mine. One tip though; if you sculpt the terrain in one piece you can carefully peel it off the wood base for baking. That leaves me free to spend some time on either seperately and not worry about paint/stain migration. When done I just superglue the finished pieces together.

Excellent article. It might be worth adding that you can potentially use ANY terrain type when making your display: from mountains to swamps to oceans (if appropriate).

I had an idea that kind of adds to that of philologus. First step: wrap aluminum foil over the base making sure that it's very flat on the top. Apply clay after that. By the baking stage you should be able to simply peel the clay off the wood without any sticking. This could alternately be done with baking parchment paper if you taped it on the bottom. Great idea none the less.
