I would make the hips wider then angle the thigh bone part of the armature inward as it gets to the knee.
The best advice I got was from Kev White and it is to work the anatomy from the inside.
Start with the bone structure then the musclature then smooth the skin.
Sounds long winded but is great for learning anatomy and proportions.

Legs - muscle placement.
