When it comes to mini\'s. I must have some Magpie in me somewhere as I seem to be inordinatly attracked to bright new shiney toys.

Of course I do game (badly) occasionally but mostly I\'m a painter.

Went with \"artist\", but I\'d rather say \"painter\". Don\'t want to get into the whole whole \"Is miniature painting art?\" debate though...

Of course, like most other people, I buy a LOT more than I will ever paint. But, always when I buy minis I have an idea about how to paint it or some vague feeling that I will be able to make it look cool. So, even though I know some minis will never get painted there\'s always the ambition to paint them when I buy them.

A lot of really good explanations here. I must say I\'m a bit surprised at the small turnout of \'gamers\' but upon reflection I guess most of the more serious gamers would post primarily to other forums that had more of a gamer slant. I\'m guessing if the poll was administered to everyone who posts pics of minis to this site the percentage of gamers would be much higher.

I think Ritual summed up what I meant by artist best when describing how he always has an idea about how to paint a mini when he buys it.

Undave described how I feel about mini purchasing. I too would love to fill an Uncle Scrooge style vault and go swimming in a sea of minis as I prescribe to the old theory of \'he who dies with the most toys wins\'. (Sorry for the sexist sounding slant, but I\'ve never heard it said as \'she who dies with the most toys wins\'.)

I\'m sure most of us fall into multiple categories (I know I do) which is why I put the word \"Primarily\" into each description.

Well I\'m glad to see I\'m in good company when it comes to buying minis for the sake of buying minis. I\'d love to paint them all some day but I know it will never happen, especially with CMoN constantly introducing me to new (to me anyway) companies with great minis that I never knew existed.

Tortured Genius and creator of great Art Bwahhahahha

That or just painter...I don\'t actually have many models.
And if I had more money I get a lot more commissions done, I love owning other peoples stuff.

I\'d say right now I\'m a gamer... everything I paint I paint to play games but try and paint everything well (ish) given the amount of minis and time.

I spend more time on characters (re: warcasters / warlocks) and much less time on units.

This will merge into painter soon when I finish up the current armies I\'m working on. I\'m still a newb painter so painting rank and file units gives me a feel for paint, brushes and techniques.

I\'m not sure really, i\'m probably an artist and bit of a collector aswell because i buy minis all the time then just stash them in a cupboard somewhere, never to see daylight for another year. I would game but i can never get an army fully finished (well even half finished :(:D )

Hmmm... artist is probably the closest to what I\'d describe myself. The first thought that hit me was \"hobbyist\". I originally stumbled across painting minis when I was looking for a hobby that didn\'t take up lots of space and could be stopped and started when life dictated.

Some will argue about the space, but having just a painting desk isn\'t that much. And being able to pack up a mini and the paints for it and take on a trip is nice.

I enjoy painting and gaming about equally and I often play with most of my pieces that I paint so they get all sorts of scuffed up but they\'re gaming after I finish and take pictures. lol

Only a year? I\'ve got minis that haven\'t seen the light of day in over a decade. :drunk:

artist, collector or gamer

Collector, I\'m afraid.....boxes of minis from 10mm up to 120mm, would love to claim artist stature but I\'m not that good!

Cheers,

I\'m actually a colector, artist (I like to think so) and gamer.

I\'d have to say I\'m a Collector first and foremost. I do tend to love owning minis for the sake of the mini. I\'d like to think of myself as an artist but I just don\'t, not because of my skill level but rather because painting is more of a relation thing. I use gamer as an excuse all the time but fact is I rarely if ever play games with my minis.

So why do YOU buy minis? :drunk:

can we add \"all of the above\" to the list???

I started out as a gamer, but I\'ve enjoyed collecting ltd ed models and certain \"groups\" but I am also addicted to painting them whether it\'s me pushing myself to create a master piece (as I\'ve been doing since yesterday morning on one of my GD entries) or a quick 2 hour job on a gaming mini.

Ah what an incestious hobby we have. It seems you can\'t do one without the other. I recall, at one time being suprised that people purchased the mini\'s just to have them and not to paint. Then I was even more suprised to find that people painted them (as I did), but did nothing with them after that.

I now find it odd if I meet someone who doesn\'t do all 3 (collect, paint, play).

I love this hobby.
:)
