Ashes win vs Welsh Grand Slam

Who should win the BBC Sports Team of the Year? It had been 27 years since Wales last won a Grand Slam in rugby. it had been about 18yrs (or something) since England won the Ashes. Wales won every match to win the Grand Slam (as is the necessity) whereas England lost one match to Aus and had a draw or two to complement their two victories. England were expected to challenge, whereas as Wales were behind Ireland, France and England in the pecking order as favourites for the 6 Nations title. Rugby means more to the country of Wales than cricket does to the the nation of England.

Spacemunkie, the line has been drawn!

You make a good case. In fact I can\'t argue against it. However, methinks the Ashes team will get it. Cos that\'s the way it always goes.

how\'s is it worked out? public? then the Ashes team will get it. And they did come back from behind.

Aye, but the Welsh didn\'t lose :) That\'s much more impressive! You\'re right about the votes though - it generally goes to public votes and that\'ll see England win on the Ashes front due to the relative size of our countries and the huge amount of people who live over your way. Still, Liverpool winning Europe was impressive as well. Couldn\'t begrudge them for winning the Team of the Year. I read in The Observer Sport Monthly that one year the public voted en masse for a more obscure sports team due to a campaign, but the BBC intervened in an Orwellian way to wipe the votes...spooky.

The liverpool thing was a great acheivement but they tend for more national teams. well national as in English! Great Britain and olympics years are better for the \"whole\" country.

BBC intervening? Didn\'t that happen with the world music awards on R2 with Show of Hands winning but not allowed to because it was anti war? Shame on them!

Rightly or wrongly (I say rightly:D) the Ashes winning team will undoubtedly win. Far be it from me to be seen backing the Welsh but you do put forward a good case.
When you consider that England only lost to Wales in the last few minutes because of Gavin Henson\'s ridiculous kick, it actually put our Six Nation\'s campaign in a better light.
It might surprise you to know that once we couldn\'t win the thing, I was actually willing Wales to do it. The standard of rugby they played was brilliant, breathtaking and beautiful at the same time.
Plus I\'m jealous of you guys singing \'Land of My Fathers\'. It moves me (unlike \'God Save The Queen\' which simply moves me to tears.)

I\'ll be voting for the Ashes, simply because it captured and epitomised the summer for me...
...and there were a couple of Welshies who made telling contributions (well, one of them did at least)

When are you going to take on Jerusalem as the anthem? A wee bit pompous, but a rollicking tune :D

The sooner the better. Weirdly as it may be perceived to have your national anthem bear the title of a foreign capital city (and I understand it alludes to Christ visiting England), anything is better than the depressing, dreadful dirge we have at the mo.

BTW - How do you fancy your chances against the Northern Irish tomorrow. Under-estimate them at your peril lol

Saw a great programme on BBC4 on Jerusalem and the origins of the song. Fascinating! (see, BBC being good). Never realised it was a William Blake poem. Stonking song!

Funny, though; my first memory of Jerusalem was Monty Python

I was just wondering...if Wales beat Northern Ireland, does that mean that they\'re better than England? School playground thinking :D

It\'ll probably be a shite match to be fair, but then I\'ll be watching the Anglo-Welsh Powergen Cup. Wasps vs Cardiff Blues tonight, and then three other matches on the weekend - Neath Swansea Ospreys vs Bath, Llanelli Scarlets vs Necastle and Northampton vs Newport Gwent Dragons...marvellous! Probably will watch the Welsh footbal though.

Jerusalem - has to be better than Hull lol

England\'s cricketers will win hands down.

They are the team that worked the nation into a frenzy this year and they beat the world-best team.

The Welsh rugby team are a (very) close second, and Liverpool were just lucky and are second rate....

But there are more of us than you lot, so we\'ll win!!

Bugger off! I meant France as Euro champs. Six Nations winners lasyt year you see, and England, in whatever guise, are still World Cup holders :D

Still, you\'re right about the Ashes being a sure-fire winner. The summer is fresh in the memory...

One thing that impressed me though, was the estimate of 200,000 people converging on the streets of Cardiff after we beat Ireland to win the Slam. A city of 300,000 PLUS another 200,000. If you look at the massive turnout for the Ashes parade, it looks piss-poor relatively compared to the amount in Cardiff. More people were in London certainly, but if you look at the ratios of country size to crowds...well you get the drift. Rugby means a damn-side more to Wales than cricket to England, where for most people it is an interlude between footie seasons ;) Therefore, due to cultural importance, Wales should win lol Liverpool runners-up and maybe Zimbabwe the third best for beating Aus in the one-dayer!

Oh, and Wales just sold out four matches in less than a day each for November. Some were done in 2 hours. We play New Zealand, Fiji, South Africa and Australia, each one a capacity crowd of 72,000+. One month! One match each weekend! That beggars belief.

Well done by the way for England qualifying for Germany. They made it look hard, but it was easy really. And Wales got one over on Northern Ireland, so I\'m happy too. Got the buggers Azerbaijan next up...or as Ian Rush called them once, Aber-baijan. The fella may have scored goals, but he\'s about as intelligent as the Chuckle Brothers! Looks like them too. And his buddy Aldridge. And Mark Lawrenson in his day.

You seen that Nike ad with Gavin Henson in? That lad is ripped! Certainly doesn\'t look like any rugby player I\'ve ever seen!lol

The lady says he was on an advert but I ain\'t seen it yet. I just hope that he plays well enough to justify the hype this year coming and doesn\'t become a Beckham-esque icon in rugby whilst delivering mediocrity on the pitch. I\'d kill him if he did! I see him ending up on a toilet like Elvis, bloated and corpulent.
