Hey guys!,

Just wanted some feedback on my test GW Assault on Black Reach Ork. This is the first mini I have painted in over ten years and just really wanted some tips/opinions before I paint the rest. As these are table top mini's I really want to stick to a base/shade/Hi-light process and have gotten stuck on the following areas...

1. leather bits I painted the base Tausept Ochre with a Devlan mud wash. What color should I hi-light with and where should I apply it?
2. Main clothes I painted the base Mechrite Red with a Baal Red wash. What color should I hi-light with and where should I apply it?

3. The black pants, who do I hi-light these bad boys?.

I quite like the skin. The black pants probably need a bit of a highlight along the folds, where the fabric bunches, and perhaps at the knee, where the light reflects. Actually, if you look at your picture, the reflection of light on the black areas should be a good indication of where your highlights need to go. I'd assume you'll also want to differentiate between the pants and boots? Your leather recipe looks nice, and I'd apply it to the boots. Otherwise, I'd tighten up his mouth area and where the brow furrows on the top of the head could use a little addition paint to tone down those two dark green areas. Maybe throw a little wash on that axe? Or the camera flash just might be blinding us.

At any rate, cracking good job for the first time in ten years!

paint is a little flat but for tabletop this is more than decent in my opinion, no need to outgun yourself there, especially when painting zillion orks. however. painting red and black is some of the trickiest colours; red easily look pink/orange and black easily look grey.
i only paint display minis so i dont know how vailable my advice is for you as they are rather time consuming. but anyway. for red i go to the brightest red i can find (GW blood red/vallerjo red sort of) and then thin glaces with pure white for extreme highlight just to avoid pink/orange look. if taken to far you can use red colour to wash it down later. do sort of same thing with black, but there you can go black->grey/blue->white more naturally. the tricky part with black is as said not to hilight too much. then, these are a bit advanced way to paint so perhaps not the best for army painting :)

leather should be easier just using a brighter colour or mix with white. i usually use scorched brown just to avoid the orange look (matter of taste).

anyway, keep it kommin'
