At the risk of being poked fun at...

I\'m new to Warhammer 40k.

After playing Final Fantasy XI for months, I decided I\'d try out this hobby. I was looking for something more hands on one would say. But enough of the fluff, onto the meat of my post.

Since I wanted an introduction into the game I purchased Battle for Macragge and a Codex: Space Marines. My good friend and I played through the missions, so I have a decent grasp of the basics of gameplay.

As it stands now, I have the following:

(10) Space Marines [Packaged with Macragge]

(2) Space Marine Scout Snipers

(1) Space Marine Veteran

(5) Space Marines w/ Jump Packs [The boxed assault squad]

(1) Terminator w/ Lightning Claws

Basically a small force, made up mainly of things I picked up at the local store. Although I know I\'m not allowed to discuss certain things on this board at risk of being banned, several questions linger. If someone would be so kind as giving me a means of contacting them, be it by e-mail or instant messenger, I would greatly appreciate it.

If anyone has anything they\'d like to add whether it\'s advice, painting/modelling tips, hazing, feel free to do so.

I look forward to posting on these boards in the future. Thanks in advance.

Hi Leunam and welcome to the forum. :) From my time here i can\'t think of anything you can\'t talk about that will result in you getting banned. ;)

What chapter have you picked for your marines?

How about Devastators
Landspeeders
Dreadnaughts

I dont play though just dribble over the figures.

Oh and HI btw and dont worry about being banned. I think you will have to be VERY abusive for that to happen.

Much thanks to you all. I lurked here for a while and I think I recall someone saying they couldn\'t duscuss the rules since it wasn\'t allowed, then again, I may just be imagining things.

Anyway, questions:

1. Captain Shrike appeals to me, perhaps it\'s the beak helmet (a favorite in Space Marines) and the claws (yet another favorite). I can assume he excels in close combat, but aside from that, what else does he have to offer?

2. I e-mailed customer-service about Shrike and they said in order to use him, I\' have to follow Raven Guard rules. So does this mean I can\'t make a private chapter with different rules while still having Shrike at my disposal?

3. The Codex tells me my Librarian can have a Familiar. Will I have to build one or can it be bought?

Thanks in advance.

Well, it will basically depend on whether you actually want to play. In that case, you should pick up the newest Codex: Space Marines, which will tell you how many of each type you may use. You still have the small rulebook from the Macragge box, right? You\'ll need that, too.)
When you\'ve made up your mind about what you\'d like, get the units one by one, and get them painted one by one. Since you\'re a beginner, that should work better. Lest you buy loads of expensive stuff and drop the hobby before you get stuff done...

About modelling and painting, check out our Articles section. It has lots of articles from beginner to advanced, there is bound to be something for you as well. If not, don\'t be afraid to ask questions.

Hope that helps...

I do plan on playing. I\'m pretty commited to this so far. :)

Is there anyway I can distinguish the old Codex with the new one? Cover art or print date? Mine says \"Printed in the UK Nov 2004.\"

That\'s on the official GW forums. And you can ask rules questions there, you just can\'t quote exact text from the rulebook or give points costs for anything.

That is not a consideration in this forum.

First of all, welcome to the forum :).

The latest Space Marine Codex looks like this :

I see several solutions for you to play the Shrike mini :

1) Play a Raven Guard successor chapter with similar rules but with the little changes you want. Their successor chapters are : Black Guard, Revilers, and the Raptors;
2) Equipe your commander with a jet pack and lightning claws;
3) If you\'re not planning on playing tournaments, talk to you friend and ask him if he\'s OK to let you use the character as described in the rules (by the way, there is a 1500 minimum point limit that IMHO is fully justified).

What is he good at you ask? He\'s just really really good at infiltration, highly mobile, top in HtH, and can be accompagnied with a kick ass assault squad ;).

Honnestly, I\'d suggest not to over do it. Characters are fun but often over powerful and can ruin the fun in a game. If you like the mini, get it and paint it up real good. Try to build up a campaign with your friend and use the mini on important missions.

Just my two euro-cents ;).

[edit]Concerning your question on the familiar, no specific mini is made to this date for the Marines, but you can look in the Inquisition army minis or chose an animal like a wolf, a crow, or any other small animal mini that GW (or any other manufacturer (if you\'re not playing in tournaments)) makes.[/edit]

Firstly welcome to the forums!.
Secondly it takes a great deal to get banned from here. (as you can see at the top page of the forums the rules are very simple, which is just as well for me!)
Thirdly there is always someone willing to help out with the answers to any questions.

Lastly we\'re all barking mad! lollollol

Speak for yourself I still have my sanity somewhere I just don\'t like to use it very often for fear of looking out of place :D

Hmm. OK.
Firstly, you have two scouts. Five is the minimum for a squad, so either three more in metal, or wait for the lovely new boxed set coming out on the 3rd December (i\'d go for that, since you\'ll get some choice, and a heavy bolter too).
With your 10 standard marines that gives you two relatively decent troops choices (Yeah, you could have two squads of 5 marines, but that\'s no fun! Plus i like scouts...).
For standard missions, you\'ll want two troops choices and 1 HQ. For your HQ, i\'d go with a commander.
Choices:
Give him terminator armour and lightining claws, simply since you\'ve got the model.
Buy the commander set and have him fairly standard (noo!).
Go with the jump pack/lightning claws combo like green stuff says.
The latter means you could use Shrike, or simply his model and call it your commander, depending on what you feel.

Beyond that, the Assault squad is great for a Raven Guard/successor army, so definitely.

On your chapter:
You could go for Raven Guard, in which case few can doubt the legality of using Shrike.
You could go for one of the Raven Guard successors that green stuff mentioned, and the rules still fit.
Or you could make up your own chapter which just happened to use RG rules. Whether it\'s another successor or something entirely different is up to you.

So. Um. Yeah. Let us know how you get on. Good luck!

Thank you all once again for the feedback. I guess now comes the time for the update.

I\'ve decided to create my own chapter and save Shrike for a future 1,500 point Raven Guard army I might build up.

As for my own chapter, I\'ve decided on a Orange/Red color scheme (I am by no means a master painter, but I think they\'re pleasing to my eye). However, I\'m stuck on what the name should be. I know I want the word \"Hounds\" to be in the title. I\'m so set on this that I\'ve even given my Librarian a Cerberus like familiar (nothing fancey, just took the dogs from a LOTR blister pack, severed some heads, added green stuff and voila, a neat little doggie). I was thinking Bloodhounds but those sad looking guys aren\'t too intimidating.

On to the list:

25 Space Marines
-5 Sargeants armed with various different weapons.
-2 Melta Guns, 2 Plasma Rifles, 2 Flamers, 2 Krak Missile Launchers, 1 Multi-Melta
-Rest are armed with Bolters, 1 has an Auspex

5 Assault Marines (converted the Sargeants\' power weapon into a scythe)

8 Scouts
-2 Shotguns, 2 bolters, 4 Sniper Rifles

Librarian Epistolary
-Familiar (Cerberus)
-Power Weapon (again converted into a scythe)
-Fear of the Darkness

Chaplain

Whirlwind Missile Battery loaded with Vengeance Missiles

Land Speeder Tornado loaded with an assault cannon

Veteran Sargeant Squad (Boxed set, gave the bald guy some \"green stuff\" hair so his head won\'t get cold)

The Veteran Sargeant squad was more for modeling purposes, I doubt I\'ll actually employ them in my army unless I\'m playing a big game.

That\'s all I have now. I plan on getting a Dreadnaught, more Land Speeders, maybe another Whirlwind for mines, and of course, more Marines. I just need some more Assault Squad power and some stuff for my scouts (Heavy Bolter and Sargeants).

War Hounds? Hell Hounds? Depends on how close you want to get to the Devil Dogs (AKA American Marines).

You\'re pretty safe from bannation on these boards, it\'s more of less like having a pint at a pub around here. Actaully, i\'m pretty sure most of use have more than one pint per sitting lol

Good to hear you\'re converting your minis, adds character to the units. Take your time and paint them well. i rushed through mine and wish i\'d done them justice... i\'m border line embarissed to field my army compaired to my display pieces.

Oh, and don\'t be afraid to cheese it up if need be;)

Angela Basset looks fierce. She certainly has some muscle on her. And I\'m loving the suggestions. Hell and War Hounds are some nice names, I think I\'ll let a coin toss decide it in the end. Maybe Vorpal Hounds?
