Atheists

@ micha - I have met some \"fundamentalist\" Christians (and I\'m sure the same applies to many other religions) who claim that the only evidence needed for the existence of God is the written Word (insert Bible, Koran, or other religious text ). Others claim that the complexity of nature is proof of divine inspiration (a point which I personally disagree with, but I certainly can\'t refute).

100% atheism? I find that surprising. Even in countries with strict totalitarian regimes mandating certain belief systems, religion is maintained \"underground\".

Theree is a vast difference between a state repressing it\'s religous population then denying it\'s existence and it being an Atheist state.
While the Soviet Union did it\'s utmost to destroy religion the speed with which churches filled after the collapse of communism showed that it did not work.

Oh so you go to Mass then? Or you just exchange presents? I dunno if that counts as religious ;). Heck, there are probably a few Jews who give presents at Christmas lol

Funnily, atheists have always been more feared than other beliefs. It was also the case is late medieval / early renaissance europe. In those times jews (the \'other\' religion then) were persecuted, but not half as much as atheists. There were not that many back then and many of those finished on a pyre.
It makes me wonder: why is denial of belief worse than the profession of a different belief?

I asked this question on ask Yahoo a couple of minutes ago. It will take a while to get the results.

I think that atheists get punished because people are enculcated with a fear of nothingness. The most feared diseases are those where the victims lose their sense of self and identity, mental disorders, dementia, that kind of thing. Self-identity and self awareness, even after death, is a central precept of western thought. Atheists, in their disbelief of god and presumably an afterlife, tell everyone else that when we die, then we cease to exist in any conscious capacity at all. Spiritual fundementalists will lash out in revulsion in reaction to this. :|~ Interestingly, the total loss of self is a desired goal in some eastern religions.

Atheists take away the political power of religious institutions by making the threat of damnation irrelevant. To maintain power, the institutions stick it to the atheists where it hurts, their bodies.

Did anyone see the Rowan Atkinson skit where he plays the Devil welcoming various damned souls to Hell? His comment to the atheists was something along the lines of \"I bet you lot are feeling like a right bunch of asses.\"

The witch trials episode of The Black Adder was also priceless.

every JW/mormon that come knocking on the door proclaiming everlasting life gets the same question.

\"in what capacity?\"

everlasting life does not mean your going to be human, to achiceve this you will have to undergo some sort of process. and yet eveyone seem to think they\'ll just wake from their sleep and move on like nothing happend.

only ever had one person come back to argue the point. nice old duck but i\'m afraid to talk to her too much, i\'d hate to disuade her from believing her religion.

I can respect Christians, so long as they as like Christians (I\'ve seen way too many hypocrites

It is a core tenet of the Christian faith that it is impossible for human beings to not be hypocrites. We believe the only perfect Christian was Christ. Just wanted to clarify as I hear this alot. ;)

1. OK, it was supposed to say \"as long as they ACT like Christians...\" sorry, typo.
I knew what you meant. It\'s cool.
2. What about members of the KKK? They think they\'re model Christians as burn crosses, vandalize, threaten and terroize those they don\'t think \"belong\".
As has been pointed out before on these forums, it seems that there will always be people who hijack other peoples religions in an attempt to vindicate their ill-founded philosophies. The Bible is clear about Christ having come for \"all flesh\" It also directs other Christians to correct false doctrines within the church. If KKK members attend church then their peers need to straighten them out. The KKK is not quite the organization it once was in this country though and few people view their beliefs favorably.

3. What about the father whose a deacon in his church, but decided his children need \"the fear of God\" put into them with daily beatings. (true story, I know the now-grown child)
Also clear guidelines in the text for this type of behavior \"Fathers, do not exasperate your children\" other passages to support this. Fortunately in America we also have societal laws to prevent this behavior. The other congregants should, \"speak for those who cannot speak and fight for those who cannot fight\".
How are these people \"Christians\"? Are they really, or just \"not perfect\".\"Christians are those who have \"believed in their heart and confessed with their mouth\" that Christ is Lord and have accepted his salvific act as an extension of His grace toward us. Thereafter we are required to strive to live by the example of Christ , \"perfecting our salvation\" but we cannot be perfect. With the exception of Christ all humans in the Bible committed sin. Some of the greatest heroes of faith comitted heinous acts . Their example shows that God is truly forgiving and His loves extends to us all. It also demonstrates what not to do & the principle that we cannot attain perfection in our corrupted form.

Just curious.

I was thinking about this issue last night.
How do you know that the god you believe in isn\'t the real god? How do you know your \"good deeds\" for your relegion won\'t land you in the real hell due to an angry deity?
The one universal truth, which is perfectly clear, is that no 2 religions will ever agree on all the points. So in that case theres no winning outcome of debate, only acceptence of other peoples beliefs :]

That Rowna Atkinson live is amazing, there is also the sketch where he plays upon the naivity of Christians by claiming that Jesus was a magician.

The reality is that most DO believe their doctrine is the correct one! That is the thing about belief and faith, they don\'t require PROOF!
Problems arise when people do not accept htat others have a right NOT to believe what you believe. It\'s ok to me that other people think I am going to hell for not believing in god, it\'s not ok when they try to force me to live by their belief system.

What would you be if you believe that the gods in all major religions are one and the same (whether they be the creator, lesser gods or even angels) and that the fundamental truths are all identical, but have been interpreted differently over time and depending on the environment...

Very open minded! lol

While there are people who believe exactly that I don\'t think it has a title (not one that I have heard anyway)
