Dear friends and CMON painters of Sweden. My question has absolutely nothing to do with painting/sculpting and everything to do with your country, so any help would be most appreciated!

My daughter(the dark-haired beauty below) will be visiting Sweden on, or about March 14th for a two week holiday. It will be her first time in your country. She\'s staying in Stockholm with a girlfriend whos family lives there, but will also do some site-seeing of her own. Megan is scouring tour guides for neat things to do and see. Is there anything you can think of that she absolutely must see or do and remember, she will be on her own, so make it something that\'s also safe.....I know, I\'m a mom and can\'t help myself.:( I want her to have fun, adventure and see things she\'s never seen.

If you had limited time, what would you suggest? Any help and advise is most appreciated by me.
Thank you, kindly,
D.Faye Nail (Nailpainter2003)

you have a very beautiful daughter, I wish I could help out! Although I expect all our sweedish members are likely asleep at the moment, (to completely stereotype them) they tend to be a helpful bunch, i\'m sure they\'ll be able to give you piles of ideas for her.

good luck, and wish your daughter the best of trips for me.

Well It\'s good to see you on the forums again Faye, even if it is being a mum.

I hope that Megan has a great time but tell her to wrap up warm. Sweden has warm friendly people, but cold weather this time of year. (We\'ve been sharing it over here).

Hi,

not from Sweden, but we\'re getting closer with each reply. :)

When planing a trip I often start off at
http://www.lonelyplanet.com/subwwway/view.cfm?categoryid=1&id=286 (the lonely planet guide is a nice summary).
And go from there.
Some usefull sections from the lonely planet site:
Traveler\'s forum for Scandinavia: http://thorntree.lonelyplanet.com/categories.cfm?catid=21
Travel advisory (none on Sweden at the moment): http://www.lonelyplanet.com/travel_ticker/index.cfm

Sweden has the reputation of being one of the safest countries in Europe, so she\'s probably safer there than travelling around the US. On the other hand, if she has a liking for blond men she might not want to leave. Lots of them around. :D

By the way, there are also many Scandinavians on Jenova\'s forum if you want to ask: http://www.jenova.dk/forum/index.php?board=5.0

Bye, Ming-Hua

Stockholm is a beautiful city with lots of water and green areas, but we have lots of snow right now, so everything is a bit grey and mucky! :( The obvious things to see is the old part of the city, \"Gamla stan\", with plenty of really old buildings and narrow winding alleys. That is the original part of the city from when it was founded in the 13th century, but I\'m not sure if any of the builings are that old. There\'s plenty of buildings from the 14th and 15th century, though.

Another quite astonishing sight is the \"Wasa\" museum. There they have an old ship that was built in 1628 and sunk right after leaving the port on its maiden voyage. The ship was located and harboured some 50 years ago and now resides in a museum built especially for it.

There\'s plenty of good museum of art, history and such and some of them have free entrance. \"Livrustkammaren\" in the royal castle is quite interesting with old royal clothes, regalia, carriages and such. I think they have the clothes one of our kings wore when he was killed in war and you can see the bullet hole in his uniform.

Here\'s a website for tourists in Stockholm. There you can read about the things I\'ve mentioned and a lot more. It\'s difficult to point out the interesting things about a place you\'ve lived in all your life...

I hope she will have a great time here and like our city, even though it\'s cold and mucky this time of the year.

Cheers,
Anders

If she wants to see more than just the tourist things, I suggest visiting the southern part of Stockholm, called \"Södermalm\". It\'s sort of the bohemian (although not very bohemian anymore) part of the city, with lots of bars, pubs, small shops etc. The northern part of Södermalm has lots of old wooden houses from the 1800\'s when this was the area where the working class lived.

If the weather allows it, Stockholm is a perfect city to walk around in, especially on Södermalm, or \"Söder\" for short.

Oh yeah, \"Söder\" is nice! There\'s lots of small galleries and arts & crafts workshops and such there as well.

Thanks everybody, and....

I forgot to mention, my daughter\'s very much into the arts and is a wonderful painter as well. She will probably love the suggestion with regard to Sodermalm. The galleries, arts and crafts is something she\'d love....I\'m sure she\'ll also visit a pub...or two! :flip::bouncy:
Thanks,
Faye

Apparently starting in Stockholm there is the worlds largest scale replica of the solar system?? I just found out today that a friend of my father sculpted venus for that. FYI

@Shawn
Yes, that\'s true! There\'s a large arena that\'s built in the shape of a large white sphere. Someone got the idea to let that represent the sun and build other sphere-shaped buildings or objects to represent the planets. The planets are located at the proper distance from the arena based on the size proportions. I think only one of these (that would be Mercury) is located in the Stockholm area.

@minimaker
There\'s GW (of course) and also a proper miniature store where I do most of my shopping. :D That store is run by two guys who have mostly been into historical wargames and such, but they have a lot of fantasy stuff as well and not to long ago they discovered Rackham and were completely awe-struck.

The best street on Söder fro art galleries is Hornsgatan I think, especially the eastern part of it. (Subway stop: Slussen)

A street with lots of restaurants and second hand shops is Skånegatan (also on Söder) and the streets around it. (Subway stop: either Medborgarplatsen or Skanstull)

I hope she\'ll enjoy her stay here.
