Avoiding the \"Tippex\" effect!

So, white. That most awkward of colours to paint. I\'ve had quite variable success with it whenever I\'ve used it; I can get a warm, creamy white to work but not a blue-white. It ends up looking like I painted the model with Tippex, not acrylic! I can\'t be the only one who has this problem! Does any one have any good ways of painting a decent blue-white? Thanks! :)

For info: I did thin my paint and use lots of layers. And I mostly used GW paints. The white ended up going really glossy and horrible. :(

I started from Space Wolves Grey, which on reflection is maybe a bit too light, but I figured I\'d be able to deepen the shadows once I\'d sorted the highlights, probably with some Shadow Grey (hey, the clue\'s in the name!).

A few choices:
Start with Astronomican Grey (GW Foundation)
Add white to highlight.
Wash with thinned Spacewolves grey,
Re-highlight white/grey mix
Highlight White alone.

Start with White,
Glaze with Codex grey/Spacewolves grey mix.
Strengthen Shadows with more Spacewolves grey.
Re Highlight White.

Vallejo Model colour Light Grey
VMC Sky grey,
Glaze with a blue/gey colour of your choice
Highlight with Flat Aluminium
Final Highlight White.

I\'d suggest if you can get hold of Vallejo Airbrush white, that you do. Its a finer paint.
Also get some VMC White Glaze, but to use that I\'ve ended up keeping a brush for that use alone as it picks up any other colour from the brush, like a red top in your white washing.

Thanks for the suggestions DR! I\'ll give them a go and see what happens. :) I think I\'ll be able to find the whites/colours you mention, my LGS stocks a lot of Vallejo, including the Model Air range.
