b3rtil WIP

Hello, I am fairly new to both the hobby and these forums, have been reading for some time now but haven't posted that much.

After talking some with my buddy Chrome about that there is showing up more new beginners to the hobby who post their stuff here on the forums, and gets great criticism and comments to make them progress to become better painters.
I came to the conclusion that it would help me allot to become a better painter with more people giving me tips and hints and telling me what I am doing right or wrong =)

I have painted on and off for almost a year now but haven't actually put so much thought in to becoming a better painter and learning new techniques. So about 3 Moths or so I started getting serious reading tutorials and watching videos and I feel like I have made good progress so far.

Anyway without further a due here is my WIP, a Dark Angles Captain on a scenic base.

The "Rock" is made out of normal pine bark and the vegitation is reindeer lichen that grows in the forest just outside my house.

Kept it kind of simple with some brown/red dry brushing on the bark to give it a sand stone kind of feel. and I tried to paint the lichen and that proved to be a hassle, but I managed somehow =) next time I will try and use an airbrush on it instead.

So please post some C&C and make me happy cat ;D

hey b3rtil!
nice start, neat soft green :) im not a fan of the lichen though, there are very few times lichen looks good in my opinion.

Thanks SkelettetS and while I still like the lichen it need some work, think I will have to go buy a cheap airbrush and feather the top a little with some maybe brighter colours or something like that. but I am poor and can't afford anything so it will have to wait ^^;

Anyway painted allot tonight at our Miniature painting study circle that my main man Chrome holds at his apartment every Sunday night where we paint and talk about perverse and wrong dirty things all night and occasionally eat pizza =)

So me my room-mate, Chrome and Chrome's girlfriend painted all night and they gave me great tips that I would not have thought of my self and I managed to get pretty far on the model. Granted it's not anywhere near completion but it is a good start.

Here goes:

I have darkened and smoothed out the green and hi-lighted it in many steps until I was satisfied, then started with the finer hi-lights that's almost white/mint green.

Based all the areas that are to be gold in brow and started putting tin biz on some of those areas.

Also put a second coat of bleached bone to the cape and loincloth to get it smother and then added a wash of devlan mud to give it some shadows, still not done with it, going to try some wet blending on the cloth this week.

I can also see now when I took the zoomed in pictures that I need to go over the power armour and fix areas where brown paint got to and cover up some of the white hi-lights that is a little to smudgy.

Also gave the base a second dry brush.

That's all for now folks =) thanks for tuning in ;)

C&C please!

Hi B3rtil, welcome to the Forum :good:

Looking like a nice start so far. Remember to keep your paints thin. It'll stop it from getting too lumpy & aid with blending/layering smoothly. Those white highlights on the armour look a little thick & fuzzy edged - paint drying on the brush perhaps? A sharper line highlight can be achieved by playing with the paint to find just the right consistency. You could also try a Rotting flesh line highlight & then highlight that with your pure white.

Keep on posting, I expect to see this guy done & in the Gallery before too long!

Cheers, B.

Thanks BPI, simple but great tips! I already water down my colours but when I think about it I might not thin them down that much when doing the top hi-light's.
Going to go over those and thin em down even more. cheers mate.

And yeah hopefully it wont take to long until this this fella is in the gallery ;D

well, its an early wip so i dont have much input as of yet, but IMHO, the jutting rock on the base looks silly, and with the mini standing so far out it unbalances the whole piece. dont over do it.

The placement of the model is not set in anyway so I will go over the positioning at another stage and try not to make it to much and unbalanced.

Thanks for the input funnymouth.

nice work so far; i would make the darker green even more darker.
Perhaps a darker shade of green or a wash with thinned black...
Looking forward to more pics when the model is more finished!!
Good luck!

@funnymouth: Not at all =) been on the interwebs long enough to realise that everyone is not trying to be rude ;D

@loctus: Thanks and yeah a Dark green or black wash would do the mini good, agree with that.

in addition to black washes, you might consider giving it some thin washes of dark red (contrasting colors shade well) and/or perhaps include hints of other (non DA) green. in my limited experience, tonal variation is interesting to the eye, even if its so subtle that it doesnt alter the overall composition of the mini.
