Back from the grave: Ghaffasa's various WIP's

So, I have decided to seriously revive my hobby of painting after a long break. This thread will contain various projects i embark upon, updates will probably be scarce and irregular and progress will be agonizingly slow. I do think it will be worthwhile however! Like the occasional cartoon you read in the paper; nothing that sticks with you but nevertheless a temporary break in the monotony.

Having said that, I'd love it if some of the talented painters who are active on these forums would provide me with input on my work. So without further ado, here is my current project; Battle-brother Decimus of the Scions of the Grim (a self-invented chapter, I basically see it as the personal chapter/retinue of Astorath the Grim - my favorite blood angels' character). The helmet and the black area of the shoulder pad around the icon still needs some work.

Wow, your freehand surprised me, then made me hate myself a little. I went down to the desk and yelled at my brushes and got to painting. Really nice reboot there. Stupid brushes, why can't you paint like that, grumble, grumble:neutral:

Thanks a lot for the kind words guys! :)

On a different note, I just placed my order for forge world's Angron.. *drool* I suspect he will become my next venture! Now I need to find some nice tutorials/inspiring minis on brass painting- and weathering. Any advice?

*sniff*sniff* Blood Angels! W00000!

As for red & brass, take a look in me thread. Me Blood Angels army thread in me signature that is. I'm quite the sucker for red & brass. :claply:

Thanks for the links on the bronze, Zab.

I've been experimenting on a sister of battle with a recipe, which includes purple. I've decided to make her a christmas gift for my girlfriend.

Please excuse the horrendous picture quality, lightning and camera settings are way off and it almost kills the mini completely. I hope you can distract from this and give some feedback, especially on the armour bits. I know the red clothing looks horrible, I will fix that later.

bah, photos always kill red. The armor looks good. I think the purple gives it real depth and the free hand on the gun and cloak are great. Nice call on the bronze and red combo. Just make sure you don't get too liberal with your highlight are it will start too look gold. Will you add any vidigras to make it seem more ancient?

Thanks for your thoughts, Zab!

I can definitely follow your concern regarding the temptation to over-highlight; it's been one of my main struggles in developing this scheme! Since I'm no expert in the appearance of different metals, I can't tell if it's bronze-like. However, it is not necessarily golden either.
I have to confess that I don't know what vidigras is, and a google search yields few answers! However, I have made some final highlights in selected places with a mix of gold and a bright metallic colour, which makes it come across as more weathered. I will try to get hold of a better camera and post some better pictures.

So, here is the sister of battle in all her painted splendour! I must admit that I was very disappointed with the sculpting quality in certain places, especially the tube running around her neck (the sculptor hadn't even bothered to make it fluted all the way). Apart from that, it was nice to experiment and grow comfortable with the gold recipe that I'm using for Angron, which will be my next project. Feedback and comments are most welcome!

Verdigris is the is the blue-greenish substance that forms when copper ionises. Where iron will rust to an orange-brown copper turns blue-green like so. The google search may not have provided any thing due to "verdigris" being spelt "vidigras" (no offence). Games Workshop released a technical paint called "Nihilakh Oxide" that will instantly form verdigris for you. I have tried it and it actually works surprisingly well considering I used to have to paint teal into the recesses and then wipe it off with a sponge. That battle sister is looking very nice by the way, loving the Space Marine (especially the freehand and the shading).

~sigh~ That is what I get for turning off auto correct. Though, in my defense it probably would have turned it into vegetables or something and then you would have been really confused

I see! :) Thank you for clarifying. I saw those technical paints in my local store recently, but I didn't really grasp the concept of them by just observing the bottles. So they basically oxidize of the metallic pigment in the paint?

And thanks for the kind words!

It's probably just a blue/green wash.

*edit* looking at the product, that's exactly what it is.

Yea, it is just a wash; but it does give the desired effect and it has something in it that makes it look dry and faded when it dries. Also adding vegetables to your miniatures is never a good idea.

After a short break of 2 years from painting, I finally present to you my captain and the first member of my assault marines, finished :)

On a different note - I aim to update this thread slightly more frequently in the future, than I have in the past ;)

I thought I smelled Blood Angels! Looks very cool, great shading on a very good-looking shade of red.
