Darth, yeah, I could have sanded off the barnacles. Of course it would have been a lot easier before I attached it to the body of the figure.
Yeah there is always that! either way you knocked this out of the ball park. The base is a whole new level of cool and the freehand on the bust is mindblowing good

Though it's still a really busy model with a lot of intricate freehand patterns, I think the samurai looks more coherent as you add to it and the balance starts to emerge. I think the armor on the back, in particular, helps in this regard.
The quality and ambition of the work is just amazing.

Just remember David,....I SAID YOU ARE GETTING one of TOP 3 SPOTS first: I SAID IT FIRST I SAID IT FIRST!!! I think it'd be funny if you go up to somebody painted a lil pooh spot on one of their shoulders, the same kinda páttern tricking down, and you can say ah bro some seagull shirt on you"!!!!llllllllllllllllol and while the guy is sleeping you can glue a tiny seagul to the eyebrow.lolololololololo

Death by a thousand brush strokes then. Kind of apropos given it's a Samurai ;) Just don't rush it. There will always be another competition to enter it in just around the corner :)

I've put together a schedule of how much I plan to get done (or at least how much I'd like to get done) each week between now and the show. We'll see if I can stick to it. Yeah, thankfully the bulk of the freehand design work is complete. There's still some left though. I've got to repeat some small sections of the chest design on that other helmet piece, the right arm pattern will go on the pants (but thankfully it isn't too complex), and I'll do something with his socks (you can only see them from behind). It could be much worse! But all those armor panels are still pretty tedious and time consuming to paint.

I think I'll be fine, there's just not much time to waste with this one.

'stay on target' ....... fantastic painting mate, the freehand (as usual) is tops but its the subtle shading on the face which I find the most impressive :good:

Wow that looks spectacular! The orange is really nice, I wasn't totally convinced when we last talked but the more toned down pattern really sets off the green. It looks great and not overwhelming like the box art. Like Ten says, that face is really incredible. I think losing teh mstache was a stroke of genius.

I think the armor is going to go faster than you anticipate. You could try base coating it all gold then just carefully washing in the black. I know that is not really your way, but it might save you some time.

What are your plans for the socks? It's a great place for an easter egg. May I suggest:

Thanks, 10, BAM, and Demi.

Ha, I seem to recall some talk about doing a hello kitty themed space marine. At least here it's from the same country. Unfortunately the pink doesn't fit my color scheme so I'll have to keep looking.

Keep at it Bailey - he's looking stupendous.

And your faces leave me in complete awe. Hopefully one day I'll be able to take a course with you (or you can come to South Africa! :D).

Your work is a joy to see and your willingness to help and answer questions is truly appreciated.

Ha, more good suggestions!

MrJim, I'm planning to take this piece to Adepticon, which is the venue for the Crystal Brush competition. If I can't get him finished in time, I suppose he'll end up going to NOVA Open instead.

mmmm I have just decided I won't paint any samurai similar to this in the next future! LOL

now seriously speaking the pattern on the firing arm fits it perfectly I would warm up the teapot for you... or if you prefer a GinTonic or whatever... just for focusing even better on the rest of the work of course ;)

Excellent. I plan to attend both and would love to see it in person.

Thanks, Maenas. MrJim, I look forward to seeing you there!

I posted a longer version of this over on my blog, but I thought I'd share it here too. The dwarf pirate is the latest in a number of figures where I've been attempting to come up with an approach for unnatural skin. Something human-like, but somehow not quite normal. The sort of mix you'd use on an evil wizard, a chaos warrior, vampire, etc. What I came up with in this instance closely follows my normal skin approach, but tweaks the colors along the way. So instead of Chestnut Brown, Rosy Shadow, Fair Skin and Fair Highlight, I used:
Burgundy Wine + Rosy Shadow (more burgundy wine for deeper shadows and then maybe 10-20% for the lighter shadows)
into that I add 50/50 Fair Skin + Vampiric Shadow
then Vampiric Skin and Vampiric Highlight for the highlights
This shifts the shadows from a healthy reddish brown towards cool purple tones. It also takes the lighter skin shades and creates paler versions of them.

From there I go to the glazes. Normally I use red (in the cheeks and under the nose), purple (under the eyes and in the deeper shadows), and blue (for stubble) inks. I shift those too. So instead of red, it's 2 parts red and 1 part purple (50/50 would be fine too) and that reddish purple goes in the cheeks and under the nose. The purple becomes 1 part purple and 1 part blue. It goes under the eyes and in the deeper shadows of the cheeks. Here's a close up of the dwarf next to a normal looking skin tone (again, same approach just with the colors shifted).

The main idea is to shift the shadows from warm to cool and create paler looking midtones and highlights. But, I still include some skin tones and use those glazes to keep it feeling like it could be skin.

Don't forget to give the same attention anywhere skin is showing. Here's a closer look at the back of his hand. The glazes are just as important here, with the reddish purple going on the knuckles, then blue ink and some bluish purple going around the veins and in the shadows. Those colors are going to show up more, especially on pale skin.
