Thanks, 10. I'll keep working on it! ;P

I filled in the outline, so now it's actually starting to look like something. I gave it a rough shading too, but I need a bit more time on that so it matches the lighting of the red too. Then I'll go back in and try to add some finer level details. We'll see what I can manage for those.

Nah, you ruined it. Belongs in the bin!

I couldn’t paint a griffon (griffin/gryphon?) that well on 1:1 scale model.

Kudos to you, right now i'd be crapping myself if I decided to freehand on anything i'd already painted on... It's end up in a slow mo "Ground control to major Tom" clip culminating with said piece detonating against a wall...

Thanks! Yeah, the more I do it the more confident I get... but whenever I start there's still that 'I really hope I don't regret this!' feeling.

I put the finishing touches on the griffin. Using the background red I cleaned up the edges, refined the shape, and added some extra detail with some lines over the yellow. I then went back with the yellow to thin out the red lines and add a few more details, like on the arms and legs. I went back and forth like that several times to keep tweaking the design. After that I was done, I attached the other arm (a bit late perhaps) and did the red portion and leather bits for the shield handle. Got a few other bits to do and then nothing left but the metal parts. I can't avoid it for much longer, so better figure out how I want to deal with it!

Shaping up brilliantly, you made the freehand look easy...A little too easy...Curious minds could potentially burn themselves here :p Looking forward to more of this tidy little number!

Looks super sharp as expected Bailey...highlighting and shading around the waistine and top of the arm just above the shield are particularly well realised.

Also the subtle texture to the sleeve turn ups and fabric inners is a nice foil to the smooth exterior.

Fascinating to watch this progress

Thanks, torn!

Had another round of freehand this weekend. I approached it pretty much the same way. Of course since the design is twice the size on the shield, I could put in a bit more detail.

Take this cum grano salis, I wish I could paint half good as you, but isn't the red of the tabard way too silky for a warrior? No idea what you have in mind though, if it's a historical or a a fantasy one so... just saying dude, your painting is always top notch

Kumaccio, yeah, the painting on the knight has gone beyond strict realism and is a bit more stylized. I wanted to push the contrast for a more dramatic effect. It's a conscious choice, but one I can understand some people might disagree with. =)

On another topic, I was out of town this past weekend so no new progress on the knight. But I did bring another project with me to do some prep work on. This is the 75mm Female Orc Champion from GT Studio Creations. I'm not sure what I'll focus on after the knight, but this is one option. So I had some time to clean the pieces and pin some of her together. I also stopped by a hobby store and found some more of the Secret Weapon paints. I grabbed their verdigris set and am eager to try it out.

I'm debating making some minor changes to the orc and am interested to hear all of your thoughts. I'm not entirely sold on her weapon. It's alright from the front view above, but from the side the pose looks wrong for the weight. It should be this big heavy blade but she's holding it as if it were light as a feather. My thought is to take off the blade, extend the shaft, and turn it into a spear. That should fix the balance issue with her pose. What do you think? Ditch the axe for a spear or keep it as is?

I'm also trying to come up with a good idea for her base/scene. The current thought is to have her standing over some beast she's just slain. I wouldn't have the entire creature, just a portion with the rest implied to extend beyond the base. Maybe something dragon-like, with the scaled neck curving past her leg and maybe one of the arms sprawled out and that's all we'd see of the giant creature. Alternatively, I could pair her with another piece. The 75mm scale means she'd fit well with one of the pieces from Ares Mythologic's Draconia line or one of the 75mm pieces from Nocturna. But I've looked through those lines and nothing jumped out at me as an obvious piece to pair with the orc.

Oh, and I forgot to mention today is the first day of the new Infamy kickstarter. They've got a bunch of larger scale (54mm and bigger) pieces. I'm quite tempted by the figure called 'Bear' (actually a barbarian/warrior, not a real bear), but for now I'm just pledging for the Doctor Jekyll bust. The face has some great character, so it's one I think will be a lot of fun to paint. The style of the sculpt also reminded me of the art from the video game 'Dishonored.' I could definitely use that as inspiration for the color choices when I paint the bust. If you'd like to see what they have to offer, here's the link to the project:

Oh my lord that red !!!! Out of this world...
about that axe on that orc female... your definitely right, somethings just not right about it??? I do like the weapon though, shaft really needs to be a little longer. Perhaps taking the back blade off and replacing with a spike ??? Would still come up pretty cool just as is though...

Spear or just remove the blade from the back of the axe to make it a single sided axe. Keep her on her own and tell the story with the basing. She is so unique that you don’t need to draw attention away from her she’s showcase quality. She looks like the orc version of Pink! She’s pync. So wut, I iz roc starz. I haz roc moovz. An I no kare cuz...

I’m so jealous of that knights paint job davey!!! It’s right up there imho with the Northumbrian and the Viking raider. Some of the best accurate freehand(meaning perfect scale ,weathering and fit) I feel!!! Award winning potential.

Yeah, my first thought was the same as Zab and Andy, get rid of the upper blade. That weapon doesn't make any sense at all, making it a single blade weapon would be better. A somewhat longer shaft doesn't hurt either, but not sure if you NEED that bit.
