Question for all of you...

A friend over at WAMP asked if I ever thought about organizing a paint-a-long. It's an interesting idea but first I wanted to ask would any of you be interested in something like that? The basic idea (as I understand it) is we'll all paint the same model or similar models. I'll post a lot of step by step photos and everyone posts their work to share, give and receive feedback, etc. I'd also welcome anyone who feels up to it to post step by step photos too. There are lots of different approaches so the more people sharing the better.

I'd like to do one of the barbarians from Red Box Games. They're 28mm scale, reasonably priced (aka not GW), and will let us focus on painting skin and maybe we'll even try out some freehand tattoos. While it'd be neat if we all did the same figure, people could join in with just about any barbarian or gladiator style figure, several of the RBG Norse figures would work too. I personally like the RBG figures, I think they've got a lot of character and the anatomy seems to be a bit more realistic than other figures (though still stylized). If we can get this going quickly people could enter their figures in the RBG contest over at WAMP (deadline is Aug 24 and Aug 31 for WAMP supporters). Oh, and if people would like I'd be willing to do both a male and female figure.

So, what do you think?

Sounds good to me. I will probably buy the mini, but we are also in the process of moving and I have a bunch of stuff on my desk screaming for attention. So i don't know how much I will be able to participate.

I would love to commit because I think I would do very well on these minis. Only issue I am having is I've like got 2-3 weeks on my current project, then there is the Warrior Priest paint-a-long/competition on here organized by NMMAndy. With my painting speed we are looking at roughly beginning of August here. Although I could surprise myself and finish current mini in a week. Tough to say. Either way I will stay tuned and let u know. Are you going to use TMM or NMM Bailey? I don't think I've ever seen you use the latter-probably because ur TMM is the best in the biz.

Here's a first look at my take on Andrea Miniature's Olfo, Fast Feet. It's a 54mm figure but since he's a hobbit the figure is only about 30mm tall... so he's a bit of a mix of the two scales. He comes with two options for the left arm, either an open hand or one carrying a lantern. The second option is clearly the more interesting of the two. As I said, this is my first serious attempt at OSL so it's definitely a learning experience. I left the hand carrying the lantern off for the time being. It's not really in the way, but as I worked on the face and body I'd position him so I was looking at the section I'm painting through where the lantern should be. I think that helped me get a better grasp on shadow and highlight placement.

The shirt and leather belts are pretty much finished. The face is close, though I'm sure I will go back in and adjust a little later. The box art had a checkerboard pattern for his pants, at least on the version without the lantern and OSL. It might be tricky but I'm tempted to try combining the pattern with the OSL. I guess we'll see if I can make it work.

That is looking epic! I have been fooling around with the OSL a bunch lately and while I am not quite the painter you are, i thought I would share.

One thing to keep in mind is that the light source needs to be brighter than anything reflecting it, unless it's a glint. I have found that it is easier to pick a color for your light and that way you can ration out your pure white for where you really need it, like on the light source. I think painting through the light source like you are doing is key. At least conceptually.

Thanks, Demi. Good advice. I've only started using pure white in my mixes at the bottom of the coat and on the leather right near where the light will be. I'll have to use almost entirely pure white with just a little yellow when I get to the lamp itself. I hadn't really thought about it but I could definitely have gone with too much yellow and not made it bright enough. Thanks for helping me avoid that mistake!

BFK, I'm not sure what the timeline will be on the paint-a-long. Earliest I'd start would be the last weekend in July. That way if people want to enter their figures in the Red Box Games contest they'd have 5 weekends to work, 6 if they're WAMP supporters. If people don't care about entering the contest then there's no rush and we can start whenever. I'll probably do TMM, though I'm giving NMM a try on Olfo. I like to think I'm getting a handle on the TMM, but I don't think I'm even half as good at it as SkeletteS.

Thanks, Digganob!

B3, dude you are truly among the best at using metallics. I always think of you as the go to guy for absolutely realistic historical type minis. Not saying you're the best in the world at historicals, but you're the best that I know of. don't be too humble now.

I just may have 5-6 complete hours of painting today-a rarity-that could result in completing this mini. So my odds of joining are getting better. Going to check out the RBG barbarians now...

Yeah they have some good ones. Wish their were more evil barbarians. The others look more like historical Vikings. Although there are 2-3 that have some good skin surfaces. For barbarians I'm a big fan of Russian Alternatives. But if there's an RBG contest then this makes sense. I will try to commit!!

Thanks, BFK. They just did a kickstarter with more of the evil barbarians, but those figures aren't due until August and probably won't be in the store until well after the contest. Too bad.

Returning to Olfo I've just about finished up his body. I stuck with my original plan of doing a checkerboard pattern for the pants. It was a little more work, but I think it was worth it. I used the same purple as the hood and cloak for the sake of consistency and then choose green for the second color. The lamp still needs a lot of work, right now it's more of a sketch than anything else. Since the light is coming from the inside the outside parts should be in shadow, however I imagine the edges near the openings would still catch some light. I will probably add the rest of his cloak and backpack before returning to the lamp. At this rate I might have the figure finished by the end of the weekend. Now, just need to come up with a compelling scene for him...

I would love to do a paint along with you but I need a couple months to get moved and situated. By that time maybe some more could join us.

Thanks, Zab. Oh, good idea about the figone scenery, I had not seen that before. I actually kind of like the 54mm bridge... definitely inspiring some ideas for the base.

Digganob, cool. Well the only reason to do it soon is so people could enter the contest. If no one cares about that, then there's no rush. Of course if it goes well I'm sure I'd be up for doing more.

Unreal love the glint in his blue eye. top work. I could paint the Barbarian need to try painting some all skin minis, thats something I have not done yet. As for the comp if its done in time I can do it if not no worries.

Agree with Canny.

This guy needs an urban scene me thinks. Cobblestone base. Need to somehow imply the unknown is ahead. He is clearly in defensive mode, not homicidal as indicated by the lantern. Perhaps his wife woke him when she heard some frightful sound emanating from the barn. Or does this character have some background that I'm unaware of? Regardless, there are so many possibilities with his base that it becomes overwhelming.

Thanks for the comments, guys. Yeah, he definitely needs some sort of interesting base. As with most of my projects, I like to look at what others have done to get some ideas. I've seen a number of people do a spider scene referencing the Lord of the Rings scene with Frodo and Shelob. It's neat, but I don't really want to do the same thing. There are so many interesting options, hard to pick which one to use!

In the meantime, I've just about wrapped up the lamp lit portions of Olfo. With the legs finished I could finally add the backpack. Not too much to paint there, just a bit on the cape, the scabbard, and then a few small touches on the bedroll, walking stick, and mug. Then came the part I was really dreading, the dagger. You can do TMM and OSL, but it seems tough. Since the paint reacts with the actual lighting you really have to work hard to force it to look like the lamp is the source. So I gave NMM a try. I've dabbled a bit, mostly unsuccessfully. The first attempt on the blade was not so good. I tried to fix it, but the more I worked on it the worse it looked. So finally I had to just (carefully) sand off the paint and begin from a fresh smooth surface. I'm much happier with this second version. It's no where near what some of the people on CMON can do, but I think it's good enough to not ruin the figure.

Now it's time to start on all of the moonlit portions and see if I can get it to all look good together. Should give me plenty to do this week.

Looks tip top to me, What about a scene from lake town or Bree.
