Yeah, this is one of my favorites that you have done. Isn't this the one that people said reminded them of Hardy Tempest's style? This really is very good sir.

Thanks! Yup, a few people on PlanetFigure thought that one looked like his style. Got a few similar comments on the gladiator too (speaking of which, I should probably finish that one sometime).

Thanks, Trystan. It's a big shield, about 75mm in diameter, so much larger than what Artemis was carrying. The size made painting it much easier. Here are a couple work in progress shots from back when I was working on that project. I started by working the pattern out on paper (to scale) and then redrew it on the shield. Then just a lot of careful painting. In the third picture you can see that I just did a rough job at first and then went back over to clean everything up.

And, on to more current work, here's an update on the gladiator figure. Didn't get quite as much painting time as I wanted this past weekend. Right now I've got a lot of projects in some state of completion, too many actually. So I figured the gladiator was relatively simple and something I can finish up quickly if I focus on it. Of course once I started working on him I remembered why I stopped... a bunch of pain in the butt stuff was coming up. First step, metallics, something I'm still struggling with. I recently picked up some Vallejo Model Air metallics I'd heard good things about. Only problem is they don't have a bronze. I tried making a mix and layering... failure. I tried using their gold and then layering glazes to take it down to bronze... failure again. So below is my third attempt. I went back to the Vallejo model color, which has a bronze, and then mixed in some VMA gold for the highlights (plus a variety of washes for the shadows). Not a perfect solution, but it worked well enough. I should have better luck on the sword where I can stick with VMA the whole way.

Next step is going to be the feathers... another pain to deal with. I started base coating the mohawk feathers but that's as far as I've gotten. I have yet to decide what I'll do with the two feathers on the side. Maybe blue as well, maybe white, maybe something else. I'm going to do the main section first and then see what I think looks good next to it. Any thoughts or suggestions are welcome. Thanks for taking a look!

Looking excellent sir. Your struggles with the bronze seemed to pay off with some lessons learned though, so that is a good thing. Check out "turner acrylics" they have a really great bronze, it is very close to looking like printers ink.

Thanks for the tip, Milosh. I'll definitely check those out.

I didn't get a lot done this weekend... but what I did do took quite a while. It was time to add a little more color to the gladiator and finish the feathers. Ugh. I need to come up with an easier way to do feathers! Thankfully that part is now done. Not much left to do, just a few details here and there and then plenty of weathering.

After a few weeks of not having any time to paint, I finally managed to pick up a brush and finish my gladiator. Here's how he turned out:

Since it's gladiator related, I wanted to put in a quick plug for the Arena Rex Kickstarter. It's a skirmish game with some amazing sculptures and the figures look fantastic. I definitely recommend checking it out.

Thanks, Milosh and SkelettetS.

Ha, I actually liked how the feathers turned out... though looking at the photos I think the exposure might have washed them out a bit. In person I see more light to dark variation as I move away from the tips. I think the previous set of pictures (post 130) shows it a little better.

After finishing my gladiator I was all set to start work on a Nurgle Plaguebearer when I got sidetracked and instead began painting a Dark Eldar Scourge I had prepped a few months back. I have to say the GW box art really didn't do much for me and I had completely written off these figures. Then I saw Sproket's WIP thread and realized with the right paint jobs these guys actually look really cool. So I picked up a box and began trying to figure out how I wanted to paint them. I didn't want to exactly copy Sproket and I sure as hell didn't want to copy the (IMO) ugly box art. After poking around on the internet I found this picture by Beck Jann and really liked the colors.

I'm tempted to pick up a swooping hawk too and do this as a diorama... but that will be a project for a later time. Right now I just want to get one of the scourge painted up and see how he looks. As you can probably tell from this thread, I do a lot of 54mm and larger figures so I'm never quite sure how things are going to go when I drop down to the 28/32mm range.

I'm sticking with the color scheme from the reference art, but I decided to try out NMM with the armor. This is my first real go at NMM so it will be far from perfect. I don't yet have a feel for the right place to put the shadows and highlights... but hopefully as I work through this one I'll start to figure it out. Here's what I managed to get done at my painting group on Sunday and then at home last night.

Sorry for the quality of the pictures. I did this real quick last night so no photo box or fancy background (just my hand). As I said, the NMM isn't perfect but I'm happy with my first attempt. I'm still trying to figure out colors for the sash around his waist, the vials on his back, and the tubing here and there. Any suggestions are welcome. I like the simplicity of the red-white-black color scheme, so I don't want to introduce too many different colors. I've added a little purple to the eyes and red shadows, so I'm thinking I'll try to paint a purple liquid in the vials. The sash and tubing I still have no idea. Oh, and for his bare feet I'm debating between pale skin with purple shadows or going real dark to stay true to the reference art. Thoughts?

Looking really good! I like your choice of colour scheme - It suits the mini. I wonder how it would look if you put a few touches of a cool light blue/purple into the shadows on the red armour. It might enhance the colour and add to the reflective feel of it. I got some very nice results doing something similar with GW blazing orange on my Scourge minis.

Thanks for the tip Sproket, I will definitely give that a try. Overall I'm happy with the armor on the chest but I agree it could use a little something more.
