Bailey03's WIP

Are you familiar with the work of Yellow One? His freehands are simply amazing. One thing he does is, say he takes a bright red cape, he will take a desaturated red and fill in almost every square millimeter with his designs. I have heard that you are actually just tricking the eye when you do such designs, and that's it is not as complex as it looks...but still, has to be very very challenging. Anyway, you should try something like this in the future.

Excited to see how u do at CB. Also excited to see you paint some Steam Punk after this. People have no idea what is in store for them...Muhahahaha!!!!

Oh yeah, I've been through Yellow one's gallery before. He's got some really great stuff and his freehand work is phenomenal. Yeah, those patterns using the same color (red on red for example) look really cool. I've got a couple figures in the collection where I want to do something like that, so maybe I'll try to work it into a project in the near future.

There's an IPMS show in the area this weekend and I'm tempted to go and bring some figures. I was pulling some pieces out of the display case to see what I wanted to bring, so I thought I'd take the opportunity for a quick group shot showing a bunch of my 54mm scale projects. The Saxon and Knight won't be coming to the show, that would make them ineligible for Crystal Brush, but I could bring the rest of them.

When I grow up, I hope to paint as well as you. For now I'm just going to cry a little. Also, i am totally not throwing a jealous temper tantrum right now either :)

I applaud your collection, Sir. That is an impressive gallery. My fav has to be that gladiator because it really showcases your skills from skin to cloth to metal. The horseman that is eligible, with the water effects, is very cool too. Hell, they're all 9+ in my book. Love the base for the KD mini too.

Nice collection of sable there, as well. Just a word of advice, store them tip down since you have the protective plastic tubes. It'll help get some of the moisture out of the ferrule

I wish my stuff looked half that good. Your an incredible painter and have always been one of my favorites.

Thank you, Zab, BFK, and moetle! Zab, never underestimate the advantage of painting figures twice the size of GW ones. BFK, thanks for the tip about the brushes. Makes sense, I'll have to switch them up.

I paint my thumb.

You are too modest and this is bullocks, the bigger the harder; twice the area, twice the ways to screw things up, twice the need for smooth blends, twice the need to create interest.

Man, in context, this little collection is so pretty I could cry. On a side note, I have never seen any really great minis in the flesh, I need to get my arse to one of these competitions one day.

There is a PBA legends video of YellowOne painting a bust, 3.5 hours of the man, should be a worthy watch for anyone, looking forward to watching it myself.

Well, I see people like Sproket, Skel, and others get the same level of detail (or more) on a 28mm as I do on a 54mm and it boggles my mind. I guess more experience with a specific scale helps. I find it much easier to paint a face or freehand designs on a 54 than I do on a 28. I always feel uncomfortable with the comparisons to others who work on a smaller scale. People may say larger is harder, but I guarantee if I put up a collection of 28s that I've done it would be a lot less impressive. =)

Thanks for the heads up about the YellowOne video, I'll have to check it out!

Bailey I'm with you. Having spent years on 28mm LotR I discovered my enjoyment for painting the big trolls, which are almost 54mm scale really. I could express my painting better with these and hence I made a move for Gokan.
Im not yours or others class but I feel I don't do a bad job and definately better than I do 28mm. So I would say it's more each to their own and what you find is your speciality.
ive just got myself the Glottkin which I feel as a real test for me and a good reason to try air brushing for the first time.

Love the group shot! I think you should pose them so they are all facing the White Speaker and then give them thought bubbles. Murmilo is like "Kill her! She's a WITCH!" Hospitaler is like "Whoa! Stop the horse!"

Hahaha, I kill myself! :D

I'm pretty sure that's what they do while I'm sleeping.

Well, with Crystal Brush two and a half weeks away I'm trying to wrap up my entries. It also means I've got a bunch of pictures to share. First is my Saxon Raider. I'd finished the figure a few months back, but got stuck painting the base. It's a lot of wood texture, so I wasn't really inspired to put much time into it. And, when I did, I wasn't happy with how it was turning out. But, I gave it another go and was much happier with how it turned out. Once the painting was done, I went in a gave it some thorough weathering with pigments (both dry and mixed with matte medium) and some blood (Tamiya Clear Red plus some black ink). I'm trying to tell a story with this scene and the weathering is very important to get that idea across.

The knight also got some weathering. There's a bit of mud and blood, but mostly just dried pigments. I didn't want to go overboard with the weathering on this one, but he definitely needed some dust and dirt to ground him in reality. The base still needs some grass, but I didn't want to use the field grass I've got. So I'm waiting on some sea-weed grass from El Viejo Dragon (ordered through Red Lancers). I also picked up a 70mm Celt, which will be a fun project once Crystal Brush is over. That order should arrive later this week and then I can wrap up this figure too.

By the way, if you all see anything that needs to be fixed or should get sorted out, please let me know. Both of these are coming with me to Crystal Brush, so I want to make them as strong as possible. With limited time there's only so much I can change, but there are a least a couple things I know I'd still like to do.

Bravo!! Just bravo!!! The weathering is very effective and really always brings out the best in your minis. I always wait for your weathering and then go "ah ha!" Seriously a grand job brother. I always struggle to get my dirt to look the color that you have on the Templar. That packed dirt look that the ground would look like after trampled by cavalry. So good work there (mine always gets to red or orangish).

I like the wood, how it gets lighter as you go up on the barbarian. Think a tad more highlighting may be in order. But it has that finishes, red oak look and it fits quite well. Two very strong entries. Oh and when you return from CB I'll have that order to you...

Bailey, to my eye the wood is too red for an indoor beam of a tavern. I would expect darker browns and black from the grime of the tavern and soot from the lamps.

I think you hit a great balance on the knight's weathering.

Krule, yeah, I wouldn't mind redoing it as a paler, grey wood... but this is already my second attempt at painting the base and with only a little time left before CB I decided to not mess with it anymore. Actually, if I could redo the entire figure, I'd paint the Saxon in warmer tones and the base in cooler ones. Right now the whole red-angry, blue-calm implication is working against me. That's a lesson I will have to keep in mind for future projects.

Thanks, BFK. Looking forward to seeing those new figures! As for the dirt, I wanted more of a dry arid look, so I switched up my colors. For the initial painting, I started with Reaper's basic dirt and then used Khaki (50/50 Basic Dirt with Khaki Shadow, then Terran Khaki into that, and at about 90/10 I started to mix in some Khaki Highlight). When I got to the pigments, I switched up those too. For the Saxon I was working with a dark red pigment (Violet), a dark brown (dark earth), a lighter brown (I forget which, but probably terracotta earth), and a yellow brown (yellow earth). It's a nice range and gives some good variation as I mix and match with the colors. For the knight I kept the yellow earth and terracotta earth, but added the some paler green browns (green earth and ancient earth). I also tossed a little bit of Burning Sands into the mix. These are all from Secret Weapon Miniatures, I've got their whole pigment line, but other companies like MiG produce stuff that is just as good. I go back and forth between colors and mix them together too, so the types of colors are more important than the specific ones.

You can compare the latest images of the knight with the ones on the previous page, but I attached a comparison of the ground from the two. Top is just the paint and the bottom is paint and then pigments. I also dabbed some blood (Tamiya Clear Red) onto the ground, just some drops/splatter here and there. It's hard to see in the pictures (I kept it subtle, figure it would soak into the ground) but you can catch a few drops midway between the horses legs and a little more than halfway from top to bottom. There's more by the ax too, but even I can't make it out in that photo.

They look great Bailey. I am reading the Saxon Chronicles right now (they are fantastic) and I keep thinking of your Saxon. I love his pose, expression, and the way he seems to radiate calm in what in reality is probably a terrible scene. He's got this sort of work-a-day feeling amidst chaos that, to me, really tells a story of a professional soldier in the dark ages. I like the beam. I might consider adding some smoke stains or even a tiny bit of gloss to it like grease from cooking fires but I like the color. One thing that pops for me on the Saxon is the handle of his dagger. I assume it is supposed to be a bone handle but maybe a little bit of shading on it might tie into all the intricate stuff going on with his costume more?

The knight came out really incredible. The weathering is amazing.

Duuude that's some nice paint .
there is no way I could ever comment on how to improve your paint , but I do know horses . Why is the horse cleaner than the knight..?

Thanks, Gandalf, Demi, and Terrafirma. Demi, I'll look into adding a bit of grit/grime to the beam and dirty up the dagger too. Terra, I was a little tentative to mess up the black coat of the horse (and the knight would walk around on foot picking up extra dirt), but you're right, the horse needs some more dirt.
