Nah, it's just a giant novelty cheque. I don't think there is much in the way of prize support for this whole miniature painting thing :p

Thanks, everyone. I've been a bit under the weather the last few days, so haven't been able to do much painting.

Fluister, I was wondering if he'd bring that as his entry. Whatever he brings, I'm sure it will be awesome to look at!

BAM, I really like Xezbeth. I'm guessing they'll let him stay in single, but who knows. I'm sure he'll do well in whatever category he's in.

It's been a little quiet over here on this thread. I got back to painting the other day. Instead of the samurai, I decided to try and finish off the Northumbrian. Remember this guy from back in September? Well he's going to be my historical single figure entry for Crystal Brush. I'd pretty much finished the figure, but the base was only undercoated. I extended the groundwork out to meet the edge of the plinth. The painting for the dirt, rocks, and wood was done using the same blue, gray, and brown tones from the figure to keep a consistent look for the scene. I'm still planning to cover the base in snow, but since I'm not sure what parts of the ground may show through, I still needed to paint it. I probably spent the most time on the tree stump as that's the one part I know will show through the snow. I added the dead leaves and yellow grass. Again, it's going to get covered, but some might poke through the snow creating a more realistic and interesting scene. I'll be applying some pigments to the ground and grass so the yellow isn't so one note with the color.

Up next I'll do some last work on the shield and then weather the figure and base with pigments. Then it will finally be ready for the snow cover.

As you will add snow to the base, I'm sure it will look great. However, I would recommend buying laser cut paper leaves as they have the shapes of actual leaves and come in various scales and from a variety of different trees. For my taste, birch seeds are too recognisable for what they are. But if you think about it while applying the snow, it'll be no problem. The figure looks absolutely great! I particularly like the highlighting of the... what are they called? Leggings? (Probably not! :embarrassed: )

(Maybe the thing with the birch seeds is due to there being birch trees everywhere, here in Sweden. :smile-big: )

Thanks, all. BAM, unfortunately the rules won't allow for it. As unlikely as it would be to get two of the top three spots, it's in the rules that you only get one and the other goes to the next runner up.

Thanks for the idea, Ritual. I'll look into getting some laser cut leaves for future projects. Shouldn't matter here as they'll be mostly covered by snow, maybe just little bits poking out. And yeah, I was especially pleased by how the leggings... well, let's just call them pants, turned out.

Thanks for outlining your thinking behind the base. I think it's a great idea to have elements in place which can show through the snow in a natural way.

Beautiful the less... Wishing to see that snowed on. Will you use that glass snow or use that baking soda trick?

Thanks. I've finished off the base. I used a combination of Woodland Scenics snow and crushed glass. The Woodland Scenics went on first to provide the main bulk of the snow. I prefer this to baking soda as I've heard stories about baking soda yellowing over time. I think that may have more to do with the glue, but I'd rather be safe. Anyway, I then did a layer of crushed glass on top to give it that sparkle effect. I wish I had more experience using crushed glass. I like how it turned out, but don't quite have the control of the effect the way I'd like. I'm saving the final photos until after Crystal Brush. I know, it's an annoying thing to do but the show is only a week and a half away.

Speaking of the show, I wanted to remind everyone that internet voting is scheduled to run from 3 pm (central time) on Saturday, April 2nd until noon on Sunday. Last year they had major delays, but this time around they're closing the model submission the day before to give themselves more time. That should help, but don't be shocked if they're still running behind. Anyone with a CMON account can vote. There are quite a few of the active forum members going to the show and submitting figures, so we would all appreciate it if you take the time to look through all the figures!

I was poking through the info on the CrystalBrush site and found this description of the scoring scale. I'd say it's pretty consistent with how I think people normally vote in the CMON gallery. I know sometimes people who are new to the gallery will ask why they got this score or that score. I know everyone votes for slightly different criteria, but I still think this is a good way to look at the score and understand why it's what it is. What do you all think?

Scoring
Each entry is scored on a scale of 1 to 10. Equivalent scoring in a traditional gold/silver/bronze ranking are suggested as:
1-3—Certificate of Merit equivalent. This entry is fully painted and based at a basic level. Technical and artistic quality could be greatly improved.
4-6—Bronze trophy equivalent. This entry shows basic to good artistic and technical quality, with some readily apparent flaws or lack of skill.
7-8—Silver trophy equivalent. This entry has good to very good artistic and/or technical quality, but lacks in some aspects.
9-10—Gold trophy equivalent. This entry exhibits virtually flawless technical quality and exceptionally high artistic quality.

That's an interesting approach... will take note of it if I ever need to make snowy bases....

I really think the scores are pretty accurate to what I think about the votings... though a little bit differently explained I pretty much vote that way. ^^

Oh and I will try to check out and vote for all of you, as soon as I can! If I think you deserve it :glasses-nerdy::glasses-nerdy::agent::agent: which is almost granted for everyone here hahahaha
And thanks for the heads up! I would probably had missed it because we are going to have some bank holidays over here at my country....
