Bailey03's WIP

Ah, I see. It has become so popular they are starting to fix it until it's broken. It happens to every company/event that grows super quick. QC and interaction fall by the way side and people start to feel jilted. Still though, seeing the gang in person and chatting about painting and having a whole weekend of seminars and hobby sounds fun!

The issue I think is they have limited time to take all those professional photos so there's sort of a hard cap on how many entries can make it to online voting. Honestly I think at this point it's too large a competition to make online voting feasible, they should drop that part rather than lower the number of entrants - especially since they're now basically the big dog of American minis competition with Golden Demon mostly gone, and "respected professional competition" and "online popularity voting" tend to be mutually exclusive.

Voted. I think both of your entries have a really good chance but would hate to call winners. So many good entries.
I agree with Zab though, they weren't 10s across the board from me either, I think I even handed out a 7 somewhere, although I did adjust my standards slightly from my normal gallery voting.

Thank you, everyone, for voting!

The competition level was really high. As fluister said, a lot of pieces didn't make the cut (and a lot of those were good pieces!). I think they tried to have 6 or so per category make first cut. I think it's a good choice, since at some point people just get tired of voting on figures. Keeping it at a smaller number means people can actually go through all the entries, take their time, and give them an honest score.

I feel like last year the first cut surprised people, but this time around it was laid out pretty clearly in the rules. Still, I'm sure a lot of people just read the category descriptions and don't go that thoroughly through the rest of the written stuff.

The big drama, in my opinion, is them dropping a few categories last minute. I guess if they can't get a certain number of entries to make first cut, then they condense the category with something else. I understand it, but I also think it really sucks for the people who entered that category and would have made first cut if it'd been an option. Looks like most of those pieces were moved to similar categories (a historical unit got moved to fantasy squad and a historical vehicle went to sci-fi vehicle). The main person that got screwed was BAM as his vikings just disappeared from the competition. Yeah, he already had a piece in fantasy squad... but still, I think they should have put it in their for voting. Based on past rules his highest placed entry would win the trophy and the next place would go to the runner up (assuming both placed in the top three). Maybe the judges felt the reavers were the better piece, but that's still only half the score. It'd be nicer to let the online voters see both and decide. I understand why they did it, I just would have handled it a little differently.

I will say it was really nice that they added a bust category. There were a ton of busts and all at high level. Lumping them in with the full figure large scale entries would have meant a lot of top work didn't even get through first cut. Sounds like they were planning to offer a bust category next year anyway, so this was just an early surprise (probably due to them dropping two historical categories). Well, whoever wins the bust category should buy BAM a drink since it came at the expense of his vikings!

Gutted for BAM, those Vikings are incredible. I suppose that's competitions for you which won't be any comfort.
Dave, pleased to see both of yours made the cut, the standard though is something else.
Atonement just has me drooling

I was very disappointed that they put the displays right in the doorway to the vendor hall. It was very uncomfortable trying to take your time and look at the entries (let alone photograph them) when you are blocking the entrance to one of the busiest halls to do so. This is what some of us had to deal with to get there to see the entries:

Yeah, but placing them at the entrance to the vendor hall makes sure they're seen by a lot of people. It also needs to be there as that is the one area that is secured overnight. Not ideal in terms of people trying to get through that area quickly, but it's the best that can do I suppose.

Anyway, had a great time at the competition this year. I ended up with a silver for my Northumbrian for historical single. In my opinion it was a toss up with Matt's piece (which did win gold), so I'm not disappointed with the results. I was hoping that somehow the samurai would sneak in to the large scale awards, but it didn't. Again, not shocked since the level of work in that category was exceptionally high this year. I'm happy with the piece and got some great feedback, so I can't complain. There are plenty more shows to take him to and I'm sure he'll do well at them. I'm hoping to get down to KingdomCon at the end of the month. If so, I'm sure I'll be bringing him with me there!

Well, my quest to win a crystal brush award in a non-historical category continues. I'm already thinking of projects for next year and have a couple ideas. I thought the samurai was a step up from my knight, so next year I better have something even better!

By the way, seeing the top work in person is inspiring and getting feedback from the other artists is so incredibly valuable. If you have the chance to go to shows like this, it's definitely worth it. Even if you don't think you can win, just enter your work and talk with the other artists about it!

Certainly disappointed. I really think that samurai is something special. As far as raw painting goes, it was the best IMO. I am actually rather butt hurt about it. The winner and second place were great pieces so I can't take be too mad. But 3rd place from Jessica was weak. No offense to her, but that particular model is tired, the base wasn't anything new, and the freehand was gimicky. David, you are a true gentleman so I know you will respond very humbly and will give the #3 overall a lot of credit, but I cannot. Keep in mind the 2014 CB best in show...

Who else thinks that John Margiotta (BaM) needs to make a huge diorama with dozens of models going to war? He paints like a machine, I know he could come up with something incredible...

Also good to see the #1 spot go to a relatively unknown painter. Just three projects on P&P. Kiril really didn't even try this year, which is annoying knowing that when the dude puts in the effort he can beat out the world, but sometimes he is willing to just ride the CB wave and let others get the glory...hehe

Congrats on placing with the Northumbrian. It's a real pity about that samurai. He is a fantastic piece. I'm sure that he'll do well at the other competitions.

congrats bailey, although i have to admit i havent browsed a second yet of the CB entries i suspect its very well deserved win. sad the awesome samurai didnt make it but as you say, it have many shows ahead to dominate :)

also BoK, michael kontraros and Kyriakos simos are more than well known, dont think they do very much fuss on the net though. they are the guys that produce 1-2 minis/year and tour whole europe for best in shows. sort of.

Well done on the silver. I was looking through the cut when voting and the competition looked very hard.

Congrays Dave on a well deserved win. So....how did the painting classes go (I was bummed to miss it, but did get released at 3:30 pm Sunday).

Im surprised the samurai didn't win anything, that was phenomenal but it just goes to show how good all the entries were, congrats on the silver, well deserved

Also the bam diorama would be epic, just think of all the blood you could do! (We've got to convince him somehow lol)

Congratulations Bailey - the Northumbrian is fully deserving.

I suspect a dio from BaM will look pretty much like the elevator in The Shining.
