I finished off the black on this other boot (though as I look at the pictures, I can see one or two areas that I want to adjust). I've also started with some base coating on the groundwork. I envisioned the column as a white stone, so what you see is darker than the end result will be. I base coated the stones with four different shades to hopefully create some subtle variation in the end. With the figure just about done, this will be my main focus now.

Thanks, 10, Andy, and stampedingviking!

I did a bit of work on the stones. This whole column is going to take more time than I'd like to spend! You can see how the darker stones end up being much lighter in the end. I was hoping for a bit more contrast there. In person it's not so bad, but seems less in the pictures. Part of it may be looking at them next to the figure which is done in a reasonably high contrast style. I'll probably wait until I've done more of the column, but will most likely go back and make those edges/corners on the stone brighter.

Also, I thought I'd share one last close up of the boots now that the left one is finished. So here's a side by side of the initial sketch and the finished work.

(I guess a brush hair got stuck in the paint on the very top of the left boot. Only noticed now that I've looked at the close up photos. Should be a quick fix with some tweezers).

Thanks, Octavian. Ha, I hadn't planned a tutorial on it, but perhaps I'll try to write something up. :)

On a different topic, there's another kickstarter which might interest people. Blacksmith Miniatures is doing a line of figures based on the art of Jean-Baptiste Monge. They are fantasy characters, mostly gnome-looking ones, but also a fairy, a kobold, and perhaps some others further along in the campaign. The figures are somewhere in the 30-50mm range (roughly 30mm to the eyes, but 50-60 mm to top of hats). So they're of interest to people who like painting slightly larger scale figures than 28's (like me), but small enough that they can still appeal to people who like working on the small scale.

I'm backing and the campaign reached its funding goal within a few hours of launching. If you're interested, take a look:

The bricks are looking great Bailey.

BTW that is a great Kickstarter and it appears that the company has already produced some nice minis (including that Toad rider Sprocket painted up). So I am backing as well for all the new minis. May get suckered in for some of their existing catalog as well.

I need to resist the temptation. Miniatures look excellent and I love the artist and his illustrations. I will try to obliterate this.... or my wife will kick me off our flat. LOL

Thank you for sharing anyway (but I hate you immensely for letting me know about it) hahahaha

By the way the stone brick pillar looks excellent such a nice display of grey stone colours...

You're killing me with that Blacksmith Kickstarter... oh my goodness, those figures look awesome.
I have one Blacksmith model which I've been hoarding and I think it's got some of the best detail and casting quality I've seen.

Thanks, Krule, Maenas, and SaintToad! Yeah, should be a good kickstarter. I feel a lot more comfortable buying from a company that's already produced some very high quality figures.

In other 'new figure' news, the limited edition collectors version of Atonement from Michael Kontraros is now up for purchase. It went on sale a few hours ago and he's already sold about half of them. At the moment I'm typing this, there are 82 left out of the 170 total. He will be selling a commercial edition later this year (September I believe), but this has extras like photo-etch, a fancy box, some art cards, etc. If anyone is interested, you can find it here while it lasts:

Getting back to my own figure, one of my goals when I started the Dragoon was to do the base to the same level as the figure. Normally I try to finish my bases quickly and, while the painting isn't bad, it doesn't get the amount of attention as the figure. In this case, I actually built the base before I even started to paint the figure (possibly a first as far as I can remember). I was planning to paint the base at the same time as the figure... but that didn't happen. So now I'm just focused on painting its parts to the same level (or close) as the figure. Problem is, painting the figure was interesting and painting a stone column is f*$&ing boring! :p Oh well, too late to turn back now. Did a bit more work on the stones. Only 5 left on the front (the light blue-grey ones). Unfortunately I still have to do the entire rear of the column along with the top... so that means I'm almost halfway done.

Hey all, I know it's been pretty quiet here. Work has been kicking my butt, so no time to paint in the last few weeks. Still, I've been enjoying seeing all the amazing Crystal Brush entries on Facebook and then the CMON official photos. Clearly a fantastic show and the competition level is as tough as its ever been (though the reduced number of categories certainly plays a role in that too).

So, while I bide my time until I can get back to painting, I've started to look forward to next year's Crystal Brush. Looks like I will be able to make it out next year (not 100%, but seems likely). Considering how incredibly competitive all of the standard categories are, I think it's a smart move to enter something that fits into one of the sponsor categories too. Since CMON has done the sponsor categories the last two years, that means I should paint a Wrath of Kings or Dark Age piece. Dark Age has some neat slightly larger figures, so I was poking through them and found this one:

It's all sorts of awesome and creepy. Pretty decent size too. Here's a picture of the box art on in the CMON case:

The piece would end up in the Monster/Vehicle category but also be eligible for the Dark Age sponsor award, so two chances to get something. With a lot of the dark age stuff I have a hard time seeing them done any way other than the box art (which is tough because the box art is really really well done). But this guy brings lots of different color schemes to my mind. I'm picturing him rising from the floor of some dark forest. The spider-like head thing has me thinking a base of dead trees covered in spider webs (with some help from UHU glue). Hopefully it will be a really cool piece and it's definitely something I'm excited to paint (which is always important!).

But, before I get too far ahead of myself, I still need to finish the Dragoon and then I'm doing a piece for the Ouroboros KS. So, just one more project to add to my ever growing to-do list. :)

Hope all of you are well and I will post some more painting as soon as I actually have time to paint!!!!

NOOOO, you leave my Dark Age alone! It's all I've got :crying:

Seriously though, I think you'd do amazing things with this piece and can't wait to see what you come up with. And maybe they'll wise up and give us a historical category again next year so you can bring that awesome Dragoon.

That is a damn creepy figure. Whatever you do with it will be superb, but I would love to see it as a very pale flesh tone, human shaped but so clearly far from human.

Or, y'know, neon rainbow coloured, you'll still paint it excellently

Ha, well I'm just one person, I can at most win one of the three dark age spots. I guess this past year only two people entered dark age pieces and looks like no one did a wrath of kings model.

I'd love for them to bring back the dedicated historical category, even if just for historical single. Now that it's merged with fantasy, the 54's aren't allowed which takes away the most common scale for historical pieces. Maybe I can convince them to change their mind. Unfortunately there weren't that many historical pieces most years, so I think it's a long shot. But I've got a few long shot ideas on the subject, so maybe one will pan out.
