Wrath of kings would be fun. The wolves i did this year had really nice sculpts with tons in interesting textures and details. The details are a bit soft in places though. The pro is your don't see a lot of them done well. Dark age seems very popular and you could end up fighting the tide or lost in a sea of entries in the cabinets. The pro there is, again you don't see ton of dark age minis done much higher than table top. Either way have fun and bring your own unique style to them!

Ha, foxtail, you know I hadn't considered neon rainbow... :p

My initial thought was pale skin for him. That would let me work in some glazes of purples, greens, and blues. And then maybe transition to black on his finger tips (since that's pretty creepy too) and black where the legs turn into smoke. I'd like to do a creepy twisted and dead forest scene, like he's rising up from this tangle of dead trees and spider webs. I've had a little practice creating a tree from scratch with Sorondil, so hopefully I can use that to my advantage here. Scatter some bones and skull on the base and hopefully I'll create a scene just as terrifying at the sculpt of the figure.

From what I saw there were 4 Dark Age models entered. Honestly, I thought they would just scrap the sponsor category because of so few entries, glad they didn't though. As for historicals, I think a single category that includes singles, vehicles and units would work perfectly. There was never enough entries to justify 3 separate categories but if you roll them all into one you'll get a good amount of pieces. The way it is now, you'll never see any historic singles because people will always choose to paint the flashier fantasy models.

Thanks, Zab. For me, the big pro of dark age (as opposed to WoK) is that they've got some nice large scale stuff. Okay, I guess it's all 28mm, but some of the monstrous creatures are essentially the same size as 54mm humans. I grabbed this shot off the web, but you can see regular 28's right there in the front. But the figures around them look to range from 40mm to 60mm+. That's great for me as I can work on a scale I'm more comfortable with. I love having the extra room to paint.

If you do go neon rainbow, I'll have to follow it. I'm about to start a project painting a rainbow dragon and breaking my brain figuring out how exactly I want to layout the colors ;P

I agree, Fluister. They might be able to support a single historical category, like they're doing with Chibi. But I think there's more interest in Chibi than historical at that show. As it stands now, there will probably be some historical figures in the bust category and maybe the odd historical entry in large scale (probably from me, not sure anyone else is dumb enough to try ). It's just a question of whether or not it's worth it for the organizers to try and attract the historical painters. The category has been there for a bunch of years, but I'm not sure it's really paid off for them. While I might want to see it for purely selfish reason, I understand that it might not be worth it for the show as a whole.

It's a shame too, since I know a lot of the pros also do historical pieces. But, since many of them are more focused on winning the overall cash prize and probably don't care about the category win as much, they don't have the incentive to do historicals for this show.

NOOOO, you leave my Dark Age alone! It's all I've got :crying:
.
ROFL :D Thanks for my laugh today.

Bailey it will be great to see you back in the cabinet at Crytal Brush. And the concept of this dude rising out of an old forest is definately interesting. Maybe using another of their figures as a summoner of the guy.

Very cool, Bailey! I have a bunch of those shadow caste guys myself, and I'm planning to paint at least a couple of them in the near future, so I'm very interested in seeing you do these.

Btw the dark age category when I spoke to frank who seems to always creep away with a win due to low volume :/ the reason they let the category run ,despite low number of entries,is simply because...it's not voted by crystal brush nor does it have to abide by their rules guys.its a separate category that the sponsored team votes on.if one entry shows they still vote...this year there were 2 entries 2/4 were pulled do to late registration that Amanda let through .they kept the other 2 there because they were there for a bit and while they were in the case they were pulled from the comp.last year they pulled the Viking on 6 entries...they would've done the same thing if it was up to Jen.this doesn't take away the fact of those who won their awards derserved them but let's keep it in an honest perspective.

I think they will keep chibi because they have some games that enter that category... so they can attract public to their business. Whilst IMO historical miniatures do not gave them that.

Anyway I am with you both, they should add at least one historical "merged" category to the contest to gave it even more "prestige" since I consider the historical category as "historical" if you understand what I mean.

Some of the WOK stuff is the same deal. It's why i picked the wolves, they were bigger - closer to 54 than 32. Again though the sculpts can be soft so dark age may be the better option just in terms of prep and assembly :) I guess it's one of those things, but I'm just not a fan of the Dark age aesthetic. It's like how everyone loves the Mechanicus in 40k and i'm all meh about it. You'll do wonders with it and I can see the freedom it would give you to play!

Yeah, I'm not a fan of everything dark age does, but some of them are pretty cool. BAM, the second one you linked, the goliath, was another one I found awfully tempting. I decided to go with the shadow elemental because it inspired a number of different ideas along with some alternative color schemes (so I could avoid doing something too close to the box art). But if I like the cast, I might pick up a few more for future projects. Zab, I'll have to take another look through the Wrath of Kings collection. There are definitely some neat models in that range too.

BAM, I figured something like that must have been the case for the voting. The two winners didn't make the cut (as far as I'm aware) for online voting, so it must have been judged onsite only. If I were coming up with my own list of ways I'd change the Crystal Brush, adding more categories like that would be up there on my list. With the reduced number of standard categories, it's getting very tough for an amateur to end up with an award. But, while the pros favor art pieces or GW and infinity, they aren't likely to spend time on Dark Age, Wrath of Kings, or any of the many other smaller games. So more special awards for those ranges would give more opportunity for the amateurs to get some recognition too. Now, prepping everything for online voting is time consuming, so I'd say do it like they did this year. Standard categories all go up for online votes. But the sponsor category winners are just chosen by the onsite judges.

4 years ago there were about 5 sponsor categories. WoK wasn't around yet, but Dark Age was, Wyrd had one and a few other game companies. I wonder if the other companies decided to no longer sponsor the event or if they were told they could no longer do it.

I'm not sure. My guess is that the Crystal Brush team just didn't put much time in searching for outside sponsors. Dark Age and WoK are associated with CMON (I believe), so it's an easy thing to sponsor those awards. Seems to me the next easiest sponsors to get would be the companies who have booths in the vendor hall. Arena Rex has been there the last two years and ran their own painting competition on the side this year. I believe Scale75 usually has a booth. Maybe they could even arrange something with ForgeWorld, though they might not want to support anything not related to Golden Demon.

With the amount of Infinity models entered every year, I think Corvus Belli should reach out to the CB people for a sponsor category.

So just when I feel like I'm getting onto a fantasy kick, all excited to start on the shadow elemental, I see an awesome new historical figure that pulls me back in that direction. I just saw some pictures of this upcoming release from Pegaso. Looks to be a 90mm figure and definitely one I want to paint! I especially like the version without the helmet.

Since we've been talking about competitions, I thought I'd share a few of my thoughts on the topic. This is one of those figures I personally really like, but is probably not the best choice to bring to a competition like Crystal Brush. If I did, it'd go in the large scale category and the winners there have all sorts of wow-factors on their figures. That's not to say it couldn't end up placing, but it would really have to be a flawless execution to stand up to the type of competition you get there. It's hard to do a whole lot of story telling with the base/scene (it's either before or after a match, neither of which is a particularly mind blowing story). Not much opportunity for freehand either. Could do some on the shield, though I like the version holding the helmet better... but maybe I could have the shield on the ground or resting against something. I could also add some tattoos... but shouldn't go overboard with that to keep it historical.

All this brings me to the question of why do I paint figures? Is it to try and win awards or is it because I love painting figures (and any awards are just a bonus)? For me the answer is the second one. Not that I don't want to also win awards, but I'd much rather paint a piece I love and end up in 4th place (or lower) than a piece that doesn't inspire me but might stand a better chance of placing. And, let's be honest, I could do a piece that is specially chosen to do well and still end up not placing or not even making the cut. There are no guarantees with a show like Crystal Brush! So better to paint a piece I know I'll be happy with and not worry about what happens with the judging. Will I end up doing this one for next year's Crystal Brush? Who knows. If I was starting right now, yes. But the show is still a year away and my plans may change. Whatever happens, all I can say is that I'm going to pick a model that inspires me. Whether or not it's the perfect choice for the competition is secondary.

That gladiator screams out for the Bailey treatment.

In my humble opinion they should add some type of historical category. I would think it would make a nice tie in with their current Rising Sun Kickstarter. In fact you would think cmon would have a category for each of their big KS games: Zombicide, Rising Sun, Rum and Bones, Others, etc...
