Base Edges...

A gaming piece I prefer to see in black edges, rather than a coloured edge, which to me relegates the models to the perception of toys.
GW's shop trend to have all the base edges for LOTR examples just cheapens an already 'Meh!' product.

A gaming piece with black or base colored edges is just more practical. In a single game of Warhammer Fantasy I think I touch a character's base edge at least a dozen times. And if I'm using a Reaper mini for Dungeons and Dragons? Pfft, forget about it!

A display piece that you're truly proud of would probably be better off on a custom base and not the standard slotted/square base, non?

Depends on the base - if its one I'm putting the basing materials on, I may let some glue run down the sides and over lap the edges and fill the spaces between with black- if its one where there is a specific base design (like Jeff's stuff) then black.

I prefer black. For gaming minis I add a bit of very fine sand to the edge paint so it's easier to hold them.

Ah, but my dear Lizcam, you used the idea so successfully on your latest CMoN submission...

The glare of the lightsaber (copyright Lucasfilms, incorporated, George Lucas, prop.) and the spill of the blood onto the base edge helps tell the story of the mini.

That's all I'm talking about. It can be very subtle and still work well. I'm in no way suggesting that it replace our traditional solid drab color.

My IG minis usually have markings on the back of the base, as every unit has a banner with a certain color, that color is also displayed at the edge of the base facing towards me. I know which squad each one belongs to and it really sticks out from the black edge. This way I can get a good overview of where my squads are right now. Other than that... just black. *g*

I saw the comment Vike left on LoG...

So, Why not always comment the base edge? ;) "I love the paintjob but that black base edge looks boring". Comment on the top 10! "Nice painting Yellow one but didn't you forget to paint that base edge - sloppy!" Let this thread be the beginning of a manifesto against plain base edges.

If you are worried that you'd spoil it by touching the base with you hands, why not use cotton gloves while playing? :)

LOL!

I have a dream, one day miniatures won't be judged by the color of the base edges, but the content of the base edges. I can see the mountaintop!!!

Yes, Vikey (and thanks for all that) but if you look closely you'll notice the edge is still black below where the stone coloeing stops. Still sets it off nice. :)

http://www.coolminiornot.com/251169 - Slayer Sword winning Beastman. The whole unit seems to have the same base design.

http://www.coolminiornot.com/251164 - same artist, wood effect this time.

I've seen that "tags" exist on this new forum software & created a couple, then realised I'd not phrased them particularly well & wondered if there was going to be any CMON standardisation/guidance issued. Then I forgot about it.

However, tagging in the Gallery appeals. From simple corrections to brand (tagging a mini labelled as GW with it's correct manufacturer), spelling character names/races/factions correctly, providing translations, perhaps tagging "NMM" or "Display Base", "Gaming Base", "Decorated Edge Gaming Base", "Kit-Bash", "Conversion", "Slayer Sword Winner", "CMON Competition Winner", "Standard Bearer", "Unit", etc.
Not as an alternative to Comments or Titles but an embellishment to them for all (registered) users of the Gallery. I hope it would make searching a little easier. At the moment, do you search for "Lord Of The Rings" or "LotR" or a specific characters name? (let alone Lrod Of The Rings & LtoR). Any result feels as though it's only bringing up a selection of minis that ought to fit the criteria. Obviously issuing guidance to users won't make any difference (ie: You must include the following info...) as it just gets in the way of maintaining CMON's position as the largest grouping of painted minis on the web (most of my tweak ideas bump into that one). Seems like this could be an addition & as long as loose moderation occurs keeping an eye out for tags like "this is crap" a boon to us all? (Apart from CA of course who has to implement all this stuff).

Cheers, B.
