Base question

I would venture to say a simple piece of MDF, fine wire mesh stretched over the top which is glued down, and simply painted. Instead of wire mesh, you could also use a cross stitch plastic canvas surface.

If you look in the tutorial threads, there's tons of great basing info, including industrial bases like that.

you could also glue down twine and paint it with thin plaster. then finish with desired color

Thanks to all, good ideas, great tutorial. I will have my eyes open for anything that looks "meshy"

A good source of cheap mesh is the sort used for bodywork repair on cars. If you have an automotive store nearby it might be worth a look.

When you buy oranges, or small batches of toys (like stone or glass beads) they come in "nets" find one that looks the way you would like your base and glue it on. Then paint. I guess you got almost the same effect.

ok, it's not exactly the same but it has a nice industrial feel:

you can buy cardboard sheets with this pattern on it. it's used for sewing or crafting of some kind. i bought mine in a sewing shop as it caught my eye (i was buying knitting needles to make into sculpting tools). it's the right scale for minis too

Tallyho-The base used for that dread looks like window screen mesh cut and fit to the base. It's just placed diagonally to resemble the diamond shape pattern and if you look at the edges you can see the bunching of the mesh, so it is not a etched mesh as it would not bunch like that on the base. I made a bunch of those cheap bases like that for my space hulk figures back in the 80's. You can pick up the window screen mesh at a local hardware store or a Home depot super hardware store for cheap.

I hope that helps.

It came to my mind that you could use tulle for the base, it will look something like this. You have to overlook my paintingskill. I´m sure that a more skilled painter can do this much better then me, but it will get you a rough picture about the result.

Thanks people, no lack of creativity here, that's for sure.
Yust an idea. I think i am going to paint a sort of rusty tube under the mesh, on the base. Just to to give a sense of depth.
And precut/paint the mesh before gluing it on.
