Base...

What is your prefered base and why?

The polls options do not include scenic or diorama bases for the sake of simplicity and because most figures will not be based in such a fashion.

My personal preference is for Round Bases. I think that they accent most figures better visually than square bases. They seem to me to encourage the eye to move around rather than hanging up on a particular detail. Or I could just be nuts.

Except for the convenience of ranking up figures for a war game such as DBA or WHFB I see no benefit to square bases.

Yeah, I think round bases are perhaps the best shape all in all. However, square bases are pretty useful for potential rank & file if you\'re dealing with fantasy or historics. Hexagonal bases can be quite a novelty, but it is quite a short lived novelty I have to say (unless they\'re required for a particular rule system such as Battletech!). Might re-base my China Town minis on round bases!

I think you\'ve pretty much struck on it as far as I\'m concerned. For purely visual appeal, I think round bases work much better. However for gaming pieces, since I do WHFB, square bases are much more practical.

I actually asked what kind of base I could use , and the offcial GW roolboyz said I could pretty much do anything. It would be hard ranking them up, sure, but if they\'re skirmishers... so what. I know by saying this people will have 12\" bases. \"My snotling is clearly touching all of your army!\" :p

Yup, square for ranked game minis, round for skirmishers or RPG use. Round gives more freedom with flocking and ornamentation. I just want to add for display pieces I think the best bases are the asymetrical, like a natural rock or piece of wood.

I also prefer bigger bases so I can but some form of dismembered figure or arm on the truly evil bases... some of the \'good\' ones, too. I guess I watch too much anime and I\'m used to goriness.. :p

while for regiments square bases are practical and look good there, on the whole i prefer the look of square bases.

also like big bases coz you can have more stuff on them without looking cluttered

I think, for purely display reasons, I prefer the round bases and the round bases from Dark Age in particular (must buy some!).

I also like the round base the most. Espically the ones with the inset area. They allow for a lto more options when displaying.:D

Please excuse my poor knowledge of the English language, but what exactly is an integral base?
Thanks

An integrsl base is one which is a pre-cast part of the mini, like Reaper Legend minis have.

I too like the inset bases a lot....
.....I wish I had some. :(:p

Years ago I bought some hexagonal bases that were inset and metal. I filled them with putty to match the integral base. They were heavy and useful for matching the fig, but other than that they didn\'t add anything. I know I\'ve got a couple in my gallery under my Mystery Minis that show them. They kept the ones with small bases from falling over.

Well... It depends, sometimes the mini won\'t quite fit on a round base, but will fit just fine diagonally on a square base. If th mini is not dynamic and squarely facing a direction, I also like to place it diagonally on a square base, to add some variety. I have a bunch of both kinds of bases, and pick and choose based on what suits the mini better. Recently I like the Reaper square bases. They are rather large and give you a lot of surface to work with, yet they still fit in a 1\"x1\" square for game play. Obviously they are not for armies since it would get expensive fast.

Hexagonals

I like hex-bases best. Probably because I like the GURPS system, even if I almost never play. I just like having distinct \"facings\" on a model, yet find square bases too simplistic in this respect. That being said, the *vast* majority of my models are on square bases, and *all* of them are on some sort of plastic base.

I only play WHFB so all of my minis are on square bases but I think I prefer round bases for display purpose. It looks better, and I agree with Impernouncable when he says that it makes people lokk at all the mini rather then on fix point.
