Bases for D&D characters?

What do you do for bases for a D&D character? i\'ve got a human monk and an elf archorer who both need bases, but i\'ve got NO CLUE what to do with them.
Thanks:D

A medium sized character for D&D needs to fit within a 1 inch square. I typically use the GW round bases. They also have large bases that are useful for Large creatures, or those that need to fit in a two inch square. For bases larger than that, it gets a bit tougher. I wrote an article on using something called a test cap for PVC pipes and those are perfect for Huge creatures.

Since facing matters for things like sneak attacks, I usually put them on GW 1\" square bases. Occasionally a hex base if that\'s the first thing I grab.

Our Gm says there is no front and back to the character? We are at version 3.5 don\'t know if it matters. Think they changed flanking and attack of opportunity. We use large graph paper and base with the square or round. On the large critters with too small of base we cut patterns to compensate the reach etc

I use all sorts of things, but if you want to have a cool looking base that\'s 1x1, you could check out the Hirst Arts site ... www.hirstarts.com ... the floor tiles from a number of the molds are 1x1 and then if you want to build a cool display base for multiple figs, you can just build a floor minus a few tiles where you want to \"plug in\" your minis.

It may not be completely obvious from these pics, but if you look at http://www.coolminiornot.com/24686
you can see the guys atop the wall are based this way.

Yowzas... thanks for all the quick feedback. Yeah, he\'s got me going with square 3/4 inch bases (to fit stairs?). Should i just use a brick or cobble stone theme on them? i don\'t think an outdoor base would fit dungeon crawlers... what about you guys?

Oh and by the by... turns out i get to be the monk... he\'s teaching me how to play for making his elf for him!:D:flip::bouncy:

Youe GM is correct. You \"flank\" by having two characters on opposite sides of the nasty NOT by having one character on the flank/rear. Likewise, AOO are created by events, not by facing.

Back to the topic, for characters I find anything smaller than 1inch is good (I use 20mm slot bases). For Large size & bigger critters, make the base to correct size for facing as per the MM, even if the model looks a bit small for the base. Makes adjudication of combat situations easier.

Use the 1\" square bases...

Most of your maps for things will be done in squares, so it makes it easier.

As for the actual basing, don\'t worry about what\'s actually on it unless you want it to fit the \"character\", not the specific adventure. Generally, I prefer the grass/rock mix, as usually you have to travel SOMEWHERE to get to the adventure, so you\'ll likely be on some.;)

Sorry Zora, use circles. When 2 figs are adjacent and have overhangs (pole arms, claws, swords, etc.). Squares don\'t let you adjust for overhangs. With circle bases, you can turn the fig just a little to get the parts to fit.

I like the grass/gravel base. Although a city campaign would probably be better based on a cobblestone base.

You can never pick terrain for a base that will fit all situations. So, I go for cool first, size of base to reflect size/reach second.

And, I don\'t play w/ any rules lawyers ... so, common sense carries the day when it comes to line-of-sight, bases touching, reach etc. issues that might cause some groups some grief.

OK, so i\'m going with the mud and grass approach. i can make mud with Durham\'s water putty, but do you think i should make those clumps of grass that shoot up like this or use static grass for little clumps like this?

i know how to make the little clumps of grass, but i have no clue how to make the clumps that shot up in little groups.
Thanks,
itchy

the second one

the first one looks too much like a jungle. do the regular static grass. (at least thats what i think, but who cares about me...)
