bases for my warmachine cavalary - ideas needed

hi everyone

you guys helped me alot in the past whenever i asked you, so may be you can help me fixing a new problem

i´m painting these minis right now

i´m very pleased with my colour scheme ( greenish, nurglish armour and the grey skin of the official paint job), but for some reason i got no idea for the bases. Normally i would have drilled a hole into a leg and glued a pin into it, so i could hold the mini during painting and do the bases separately , but the legs are so thin that for the first time i was scared to break the mini. So i already glued the minis on the bases ( so no big rocks or warjack wrecks they could jump over, which was my first idea ).

So heres my question:

Does anyone of you have an idea how you would decorate these bases ? theyre 50 mm, so i got plenty of space. I don´t want it to be just grass and sand like the ones on the site, because in my opinion it would be a waste not to use a large base for something more complex.
Unfortunately, my mind is blank, so any input is welcome

btw : warmachine is steampunk, so crazy ideas are especially welcome

What comes to mind right off is less is more. Maybe cracked earth, cracked/weathered road, sidewalk with rocks and broken bits about. The fig lend\'s itself to the \'post-apocolypse\' look.

hey

sorry for the late response guys , but i´m going to the hospital today ( nothing big ) and had to search for some stuff (damn german burocracy ) .

@shawn : good idea . i think i go with that look and try a trench / ruins . somethingwith barbed wire and metal pieces.

say how would you do cracked earth?? milliput or better thin cork plates cut into shape?

and where do i get barbed wire ? i know GW sells it, but i ´ve seen the price and wonder if there´s a cheaper alternative.

@manus: the other bases are earth in some reddish colours ( wanted it to look like some strange dessert ) and drybrushed grass . but these bases are very small and alot is actuall cavered by the minis - take a look at the pistol wraith - it covers so much of the base that you only got a small rim for base decoration. For some of the new bases i have small cog wheels and mechanical parts from an old pocket watch from ebay. it looks good, but i´m still experimenting

anyway you will hear form me at thursday, when i´m back home. a friend borought me his camera so i will try to upload some decent wip pics

Barbed wire - model train suppliers?

As far as cracked earth, you might make a piece of \'sidewalk\', let it set then simply break it up, and glue it into place. Put a bunch of debris on top of that.

When I saw the mini you\'re doing, it had long spindly legs and such and it seemed that if you got too much big stuff going on on the base it would camouflage or blend in too much.............IMO

I\'ve used tea out of a tea bag mixed with 50% elmers glue and 50% water to get that soggy swampy look, and then added some instant water to bases before. I\'ll try and find a decent picture of it, but it gives you that swampy look. With a bit more effort I\'m sure you could add objects in the water and other things to make it look more cryxian.
