Basing question

I used a can lid for a small diorama, and am debating whether I should paint the lid, or leave it as is. The lid is sort of a burnished gold metallic, and the diorama is completely contained within the slight indentation in the lid. The scene is a subterranean one, and I thought if I painted the lid black, the whole scene with base might be too dark. Any strong opinions?

Difficult to say without seeing a picture (hint hint!) but in my VERY humble opinion, I think you\'re right, black might just \'darken\' it all too much.
