Basing with Cork

I use cork on most of my miniatures. This guy has a pin in every foot, all the way down through the cork and base and the pins are fixed with putty underneath the base:

Ya\'ll talked me into it ... really, no need to twist the arm anymore.

Gonna buy some cork this weekend and give it a try. Love the ideas that I\'m picking up here.

If you REALLY want kick-ass cork bases, also buy some Vallejo Pumice putty, and smear that around the cork. This creates a more natural looking rocky surface, rather than looking like individual big rock pieces. And it\'s *really* easy to do these bases.

This dread is done that way:

As for pinning, I dont even bother going down through the plastic base. I just pin into the cork. No problems so far. The cork is surprisingly co-operative with superglue. In fact, I find it can be hard to remove a figure from the cork base once the glue sets!

I\'ve got to find a place that carries most of that in my area as so far the only game store I have found with a decent selections is a Hobby Town and it only carries maybe 10-15 Vallejo Model Colors (all the game colors) and I\'ve never seen the Vallejo Pumice.

Is there a good online store that people trust for this that isn\'t two heavy on the S/H? (US please .. UK just costs a bit much in the shipping).

As for the bottle of wine ... hehe .. wife would be rather upset with me if I suddenly start becoming a wine conisure (sp?) overnight just to get the corks (heh).

One thing else about the pinning. Try to get a wire or paper clip that is only slightly smaller than your drill bit. To save wear and tear on your tiniest bits, use larger ones for the larger pieces. I use heavy duty paper clips for these. Also be careful. Many of us have drilled our fingers.

Funny that you mention Be\'Lakor on a cork base. That\'s exactly what I did HERE. I also used paperclips that were bent in an L shape so they would not pull up through the base. They went up through the bottom of the base, through the cork, and into his heels. He\'s quite sturdy and I really like the effect. Priming was done with black and the paint stuck very well. There was on small area that did hang over the base and so the paint was easily rubbed off, but also easily reapplied when it was done. Let us know how it goes!

Went and bought my cork board and wine corks yesterday and started cutting, breaking and gluing. Got a couple of them started up .... looks like they are going to be great.

Think I just found my first mini that I\'m gonna base like this.
