Beauty And The Barbarian

Not too long ago, amypaintsminis was remarking that I needed to paint something \"pretty\". At first I thought she must be crazy, but then I realized it would be a good challenge and learning experience. So, we agreed upon the \"Beauty And The Barbarian Miniature Exchange 2004\" - I would do a Reaper fairy (whom I have dubbed Aymee) for her and she would do a Reaper Thor for me. After much swearing and wishing ill upon Werner Klocke for the wings on the fairy, she came out pretty well I think. And Amy did a great job on Thor - he will look awesome among my barbarian horde. You can see the results of our exchange at:

Thor:

Comments welcome, but the first person to proclaim me \"Fairy King\" instead of \"Barbarian King\" will have my horde of savages to deal with lol

Hey Primeval

I hope you dont think I am taking the mick when I say that I think the fairy is my favourite of your paint-jobs in your gallery! I think she is superb! almost an Inge/Jenova style - very cool!!

The one thing I have noticed in a few of your more recent pics is a lack of contrast. It would be nice to see slightly darker shadows and brighter highlights just to make the mini \'pop\' that bit more.

But dont get me wrong, I think its a fantastic job!

amypaintsminis thor is awesome too!! Gonna have to go check out her gallery!

amypaintsminis really showed you up on that one, Primeval. She gave you a cute fairy and you gave her a barbarian that she was able to make pretty - not a fair trade. Now why didn\'t you go for a daemonic fairy look? ;)

Both are excellent.

say it aint so....

I am all for broadening your horizons but egads man!!!

I thought I was seeing things when I saw in the \'shout box\' that you were busy painting fairy wings, but sure enough.....

The Barbarian King has been civilized.lollollollol

I voted and commented on both. And although it pains me to admit it, your bold clean colors work very well for that style of mini.

What kind of topsy turvy world am I living in anyhow???;)

Now, get back to drinking some strong honey ale out of a horn and sharpen your axe. You are the King of Barbarians....don\'t be getting soft on us now. ;)

Didn\'t know that you had it in you!!

Kevin;

I\'m speachless. Didn\'t know that you had it in you big guy. Nice fairy! lol

Amy\'s Thor is really awesome. No offense but I think you got the better end of that trade!

If it makes you feel any better I gave up on the dwarves for a bit and painted up a Christmas Sophie. It was an interesting change of pace. Check her out at :
Grumb\'s Christmas Sophie

Seriously though, really nice work on the fairy... ;)

Primeval - King of the Fairies

- snicker, snicker -

Sorry about that. I\'ve always been the one who couldn\'t resist when someone says, \"Don\'t you dare do...\" :duh:

Very nice paint job, though, and such a change of pace for you!! Although I agree with SuperVIke, this definately is a topsy-turvy world we\'re lilving in  I mean, first you\'re painting fairies and Amypaintsmini\'s is painting thugs. Then, if that\'s not bad enough, Grumb is painting Sophie!!! WHere will it all end ???

Grumb, I would\'ve thought you\'d at least put a green stuff beard on her or something :D

Anyways, truly nice work all around. All three are very nice minis. I\'ll, uh, keep my eyes open for that barbarian horde

two thumbs up from me! it\'s great to see how people handle it when confronted with a mini they would not normally paint and can not fall back upon tried and true styles/techniques. You both produced really nice pieces here.

It\'s funny, I\'ve kind of jumped into this mindset to some degree, I try to make a point to do something new or different with every mini I paint!

Nice jobs both of you, oh, and nice sophie too :)

Thanks for the input everyone, it is much appreciated :)

Peter: thanks for the praise, and the advice as well. I do see what you mean about the contrast, and I will endeavor to go a little further between my shade tone and final highlight tone.

Moderrhu: Yes, Amy kind of pulled a fast one on me, I should have demanded she do something with a bloody weapon or something :) But I am still quite pleased with her Thor!

Grumb: No offense taken, Amy is a much better painter than I, I am almost embarrassed to send her the fairy in exchange for the awesome figure she did for me. And nice Sophie!

Everyone else - sorry for the shock
:D

It was good to stretch and try something new, but now it\'s back to work on the three barbarian conversions sitting on my table (one will include a slashed throat with blood pouring out into the snow, so that should help ease the painful memories of painting fairy wings....)

Getting back into character, are you? lol
Very nice work on the fairy, though. You should definitely try it again some time! ;) I do agree with Peter on the contrasts, but it is still a great job!

Well, one of the conversions is actually a diorama of a scene in \"The Frost Giant\'s Daughter\" by Robert E. Howard. Conan will be standing atop the just slain second giant (the one with the slashed throat) pointing over at Atali, telling her she can not escape him. Anyway, Atali will need to be done \"pretty\" as well, so this was good practice - I got my skintone for her by doing this fairy. But yes, back into character for me!
