Hi folks been quite a while now since i last painted anything (close to 5 years now ), but at that time i had seemed to have reached a plateau and didn't see any improvement whatso ever , as i had a freind who used to paintand had sort of freindly rivalry going to ush one other.
he no longer paints thanks to the time vacuum that is warcaft but i am finding i can't quite get the urge to pick up a paint brush through fear of being worse when i stopped and hitting that plateau again, any hints tips as to what motivates or drives you onwards to get these mini's painted

thanks for any replys or comments in advance

btw freind and meself used to post mini's on here under the username nwmp, mine are the crap lower scored minis if you check them out :)

I had a 6 year break, and when I picked a brush up again I was certainly well below my old standard. That could just be me getting old of course.

The trick is to accept you're going to need time to get back to your old level. Pick up a few figures and just work your way through them, however bad they feel. Don't throw yourself straight into a big new project (I made that mistake which is why my WIP died after 2 figures) because it will inevitably not be of a high enough standard to motivate you. Just potter around with odd figures until you feel you're seeing the right standard.

I used this period to try out some new techniques, NMM, 'juicing' and also to try new paints and toys (I'd never used any mediums, or VJ paints). Playing with new techniques helps motivate you and 'justifies' that initial learning curve.

I've been painting again for around 3 months now and I'm approaching my old level.

Don't worry about it. Just paint.

Start a WIP if you'd like to get some pointers on what you can do to improve. And practice seems to be the biggest factor, one I sorely lack.

EDIT: Oh! A recent tip. Save the earliest figure you do so you can compare to what you're doing at the present, and get a quick shot of encouragement when you need it.

Paint something small - like the face of a model. Go crazy on it, and just look forward to the completion of this one part. Small milestones add up to a sweet mini.

I had a ten year break from painting and when I started again I found I was better than I had been and I improved faster. You will always hit points when you don't seem to improve, the further you push yourself the harder it becomes to reach a higher level. I would say just enjoy what you are doing and try new things.
