Beginner\'s luck?

Can\'t say it enough, we are swimming in talent here :flip:

Okay, I picked up this painting thing about three weeks ago; I mail ordered so I had lots of time to prepare myself and gather info ( I didn\'t know CMON back then.)
So I got those two mini painted...

I totally enjoy the hobby, first... and I think I
get it right... I\'m quite proud in fact
What do you guys think?

Good to hear someone with so much enthusiasm. That\'s important. I would say that you could use to blend smoother and (mabey need a smaller brush) work on neatness. Keep posting WIPs and keep practicing.

great start. the vamp seems to be the better of the two - hes not so busy.
the first thing you need to work on is the amount of paint on your brush - as mentioned by shawn this could be as easy as getting a smaller brush. also, id work on the simplest minis you can find - lots of smooth surfaces where you can practice putting down thin layers of paint. this will also help because you will be able to limit your palate. i try and master a color grouping at a time (blues, reds metallics, etc).

Good start. I think you should thin your paints and work on a smooth base coat. then use washes for shading.

I generally tell people to try and master on technique at a time.

Read the articles in the articles section as well and practice, practice, practice. Good luck.

Adding to what the others have said. It looks too shiny. Are you using gloss coat? Try a matt varnish of some description. (Not purity seal from GW as this really isn\'t matt.) Don\'t forget it is best to apply this OVER a gloss coat rather than instead of.

Thinned paint is a must, I had to realise it while working on the Vamp.. I think I thin them too much now, they\'re runny^^

The shinny is because I had to use a dim flash (Still don\'t have enough lighting.) They\'re not varnished yet.
Neither are they WIP, tough you can get confused, lol.

I\'m practicing my shading on a cheap-ass horse fig I got at a dollarstore. I need to buy colored Ink (Just so much you can do with browns..) before I move on. Inks still scare me a little, in fact, so easy to destroy a whole surface with just one drop...

The details really come up in photo, I didn\'t realise the dwarf looked so dirty...

Anyhow, I\'ll try to bring you a solid 5 next time

That\'s what paper towels are for. Keep your paint thin, but wipe the excess on the paper.

ok, everything people have said is true but I think that when someone starts painting miniatures the #1 biggest thing to develop is brush control. Color composition, learning to use the paints, learning techniques is all important of course, but if you can\'t control the brush and put the paint where you want it, then it\'s all useless.

Brush control is learned by paint more and more and more. So I would say step one is just paint a ton of minis! just Enjoy the process and don\'t put too much presure on yourself to produce great pieces. Just get a feel for your brush and a feel for painting on a 3d canvas on such a small scale. That\'s step one when picking up the hobby I think.

Besides, I\'m already enjoying the process ( Good advice though.) alot and I won\'t stress myself with the scores here... as all my friend know nuffin bout painting and they all say \" Wow! That\'s so cool, didn\'t know you could do that!\"

Eric\'s spot on! You can learn a lot by reading tutorials and asking questions, but you definitely need to paint a lot in order to be able to apply the information you collect. You\'re off to a good start here, so just keep painting! Your enthusiasm is a good sign!
