Behemoth Mountaineer

Greetings!

This is my first post - glad to finally be a part of the best community of painters I\'ve ever come across. I\'ve been lurking around here for a long time, and painting even longer. Started as a kid back in the days of Ral Partha and Grenedier, took some time off, then recharged the brushes about 6 years ago. Finally decided to start tossing my work out there for some good honest criticism and comment.

So having just made my first CMON submission, I thought I\'d put up a quick forum post too. If you\'ve got a moment to spare, I\'d love to hear your honest thoughts on where my painting chops are at in this point in my career. I promise not to do this for every mini I toss up on the site. ;) But I\'ve got some time to make up for, and wanted to get right to the heart of things . . .

The mini is here: http://www.coolminiornot.com/220072

Keep in mind, this isn\'t the first figure I\'ve ever painted. Not by far. Just the first I\'m putting out there for critique.

With that said, thanks for having me, and I\'m looking forward to being a part of the community. :)

Hi and welcome to this forum! This is a very good looking mountaineer you have there. I especially like your work on the wood club and the leather parts of the gear. PErsonally I would have done a darker green on the skin but that\'s a matter of taste.
my rating would be 7,5 so you got a 8 as a little \"rackham bonus\" ;) :D
Cheer and keep it up!

Ima have to parrot what Rancid said, the club and leather looks great, the shading on the (what looks like) pig over his back looks really smooth.

Id suggest bringing the green highlight up a few shades and the shadows slightly deeper. other than that, its a solid paintjob. good work and welcome.

That\'s a fair observation - not a ton of contrast on the skin. Leads me to a dumb question, but I\'ll ask it anyway . . . . I\'ve given this guy a good 2 coats of matte varnish. Bad idea to go back now and push the shading and highlighting on this figure? Or is that something that even good painters will routinely do?

Thanks for the comments. :)

I dont do it that often (cause I dont often use varnish) But I think that it is done fairly often without any probs. But hopefully someone with more experience on that will pipe in.

VERY nice. Never knew Rackham had Ork\'s that looked like that. I like that style better than the others I\'ve seen.

The paint job\'s great, I think instead of so many shots, do maybe 4 at the most and have them be the full width. The small size diminishes such nice work a bit. I don\'t \'ding\' for photo issues. Great work. Hope to see much more.

Thanks for the tip Shawn. I clearly have a thing or two to learn about image posting though. In trying to do a single row of full width images when posting the other Mountaineer just now:

[EDIT - link updated to the new bigger pics] http://www.coolminiornot.com/221431

...I somehow managed to keep the pics as small as before!

<hangs head in shame, goes back to read instruction page>

Granddad!
couple of nice jobs there

the second one is the better way to post the pics, so long as you keep the width at 600 pixels they should come out a nice size

So with a big stick and alot of time, even newbies like me can be taught. ;) I\'ve finally learned the ins and outs of properly photographing and uploading pics. Thanks to those who sent PMs directing me to some really good posts. What a great community this is - glad to be a part of it now. :)

Cheers!
