Hi everyone i have recently joined the ranks of the Golem Painting Studio Academy and i am starting this WIP thread to show you guys my progress and also to keep track of it myself as i make this journey to hopefully become a commission painter feedback on my work would be much appreciated to help me improve.

The photo above is of some chaos warriors which myself and fellow Academy students painted in an hour after an intense training session with speed being key but maintaining the quality that was required of us. This was an intresting experience which i enjoyed quite alot but still i feel i need some more practice the chaos warrior i worked on is the second from the left on the front row the one behind was from the previous week before i was trained and just let loose as you can see there is a massive difference in how complete the paint jobs are on the two models and also the quality. Any comments critic etc is most welcome thanks :)

Spinetail WIP

Heres a Skaven model i painted a couple of weeks ago just for fun to try some new pigments and weathering on some TMM not completely finished yet still have to touch up some parts such as adding some light on the tail skin etc any feedback would be most welcome on what i could improve on. Sorry about the photo its a little blurred something else i have to work on too so any tips or advice on that would be most welcome too!

Really nice skaven, for a so big picture you achieved really good results, with a neat and clean paintjob, good lighting. and the pigments were used scarcely but just enough. And a good overall color scheme! Thumb up!

Hey Boubi thanks for the feedback i am glad you like the paintjob this is the first thread i have created on any forum to display my work to the painting community in general so this is a new experience for me but i feel a good one to help me as a painter. As i am not a massively experienced painter atm i am trying to get the basics down like the blending lighting and keeping the paintjobs clean and neat so thanks for the thumbs up an i will keep at it over and out!

Welcome to the forum Ben. I've been on a golum painting day so your training is in good hands. I've never painted a mini in an hour...must give it a go. Your chaos warrior looks neat and you can see all the right bits which suggests your colour scheme and contrasts are working well.

spinetail is shaping up nicely indeed. Are you going to do a display base for him?

Hi Will thanks for the welcome and the feedback on my work its much appreciated. I too also feel i am in good hands i learn so much in every lesson i attend at the Golem Painting Studio. I had never painted a mini in an hour also before this chaos warrior was quite an intresting experience i would recommend trying it, helped me to discover some of my painting demons anyway:p
I am not sure on the the display base for Spinetail to tell the truth i have never done a display base for any of my minis but i have seen alot of minis on coolminiornot with them and they seem to add something special, how would you go about building one for the first time?

Hey Ben,

I am not the best person re basing as its something I don't spend as much time as others on. I would have a think about what setting you want to put spinetail in first. Maybe do a gallery search on here using skaven keyword. Limit to 8+ scores and see what comes back. There will be a lof of sewer scenes I am sure.

You can use simple materials and what I am sure is a copious amount of bitz from Golum? Plasticard, cork chunks, Milliput and dried small roots from plants are big favourites. If you have the funds and the inclination the Miniature Mentor dvd/download by Ben Komets specifically on basing gives great examples to the uninitiated such as me.

If you wanted to create half a sewer pipe you may be able to use something like a large tube chopped down the middle to make the wall. Coat it in glue and then use some miniature bricks to make the sewer wall etc.

Yeah sounds like a good idea Will i have some basing bits some ceramic bricks cork etc i could use to make a base would like to make the model removable aswell so i can game with it. I will take a look around the cmon gallery to search for some inspiration and hopefully get one done in the near future:)

Welcom to the forumns. I like the metallics on the chaos warriors. Will be nice to see your progress.

For a small sewer pipe you could cut and drill out the end of a plastic frame, or go and buy a chuppa chup (lollies with a perfect piece of plastic pipe) :)

Warning!!! When you start basing, it starts to be addictive... You can spend more time than on the mini itself ;) It is a really nice addition to only mini painting. Basing allow you even more freedom, then you will start to look all around you for new ideas and material... Be careful, you start with a simple base then you finish spending 50h on a base!

It's true! Sometimes when you are first starting you can end up doing the base and mini separately only to find the base turned out better than the mini. Make sure you keep them close by each other so you can see how the mini fits in both in terms of scale and overall tone ;)

I will bear this in mind boubi and Zab when i attempt this base task which sounds all but basic :p i will make sure that the base compliments the miniature rather than ditracting from it :)

Aventine Roman Praetorians i am currently working on table top standard paintjob with the use of transfers still need to do a bit of work on them basing some clean up etc and the rest of the unit anyway here we go
