Best materials for moutain-style bases?

Hello,

I\'m trying to make some mountain/cliff edge bases for my models but having trouble finding suitable materials.
Here\'s what I want my bases to do:

-The models need to rank up, so no bits sticking out the side to any large degree.
-I want the front to look like a cliff edge while the top needs to be quite flat.
-I need to be able to have the bases at different heights depending on certain models.

At first I thought slate would be perfect to use, as it looks great for cliff edges, but it would be hard to get the right shapes so all the models rank up properly and have the right height ratio.

Any ideas on what I could use? Or even any tips on working with slate?

somewhere there is a tutorial on fake slate. Hard sculpy (kinda pink) and regular sculpy (white).
Put a layer of one, then a layer of the other. Roll out. Fold over. Roll out. Fold over. Repeat as necessary.
Bake.
Break edges (pliers are helpful)
You will end up with a structure that is multi-layered like shale or other sedimentary rocks.

when I\'m using slate I have a pair of heavy duty clippers for \"shaping\" it.. make a basic starter shape with a bit of putty (milliput works out loads cheper than Greenstuff for this kind of theing.. Then I stick the first main pieces of slate ito this . After that I use vallejo grey pumice texture paste to do the top and also use bits of cork slate and any small random ieces twigs etc to finish..

i\'m sure you can use tree bark (as used in gardening or for softening the ground in playgrounds)

looks like the fake slate, free and easy to shape, plyers and a hobby knife are all you need.

That would be pine bark mulch. This material is very layered and will work as slate if primered and painted.
