Best New Wave Band

The Cars are Classic Rock?

OH god, when did I get old?

I was never too much into New Wave at the time, but I can\'t help but loving some of those songs now, years later.

What would REM be considered?

Hmm -

Forgot the uber classic hairstyles of A Flock of Seagulls.

They were about as 80\'s as you could get.

Soft Cell and A Flock of Seagulls are prime examples of the genre - Good call, steelcult!

@Supervike - REM is definitely from the time period and another great band, but their style isn\'t what I would call \"New Wave\". I would probably lump them into the same category as The Smiths, Sisters of Mercy, and other \"guitary\" bands of that time period that weren\'t exactly mainstream and weren\'t \"hard\" enough to label as metal or grunge. I think by default they were labelled as \"alternative\", whatever that means.

Has anyone suggested Missing Persons yet. I always thought of them as New Wave.

I hated New Wave at the time, not the least of reasons being that they were crowding my favorite bands off the radio. Kinda like Supervike though, I do like a lot of them now. In fact, I got out Devo after placig my vote and its playing now.

(But Moterhead is up next in the lineup.)

Sisters of Mercy is the height of goth-dom! You can\'t lump them into the same category as REM! That would upset the hell out of the poor sensitive goths out there... lol

I never really got the hang of labelling music so terms like \"new wave\" went totally over my head (don\'t even mention the garage/house debate). However, from the list I\'d like to give the Pet Shop Boys a thumbs up (but not in the way that Neil Tenant would like ;) ) I feel their music has always been different to the norm and their videos also helped to push the boundaries of normality. Also, didn\'t they record a song with Dusty Springfield? ... instant legendhood.

Has to be Depeche Mode for me. They may have some disappointing stuff under their belt, but Violator more than makes up for it on its own by being one of the most perfect albums ever. It still sounds groundbreaking these days.

Their last album, Playing the Angel, was fantastic too. The first half in particular is amazing and Dave Gahan has never sounded better.

Agreed! Went to see them at their album tour and it was bloody amazing! One of the best concerts I\'ve ever seen. Beaten only by...

... the Cure!!! :D

Next one: Blancmange. Dunno if they were one-hit wonders or not, but they otherwise typify the genre, if it can indeed be typified.

Sisters Of Mercy... hmmm, and someone mentioned Bauhaus... those, along with The Mission, were the iconic Gothic bands of their time. This is before gothic went all vampiric and dark and shite. Listening to Andrew Eldritch singing \"Marion\", I still have to wonder how much sandpaper that man ate.

Goth have always been dark, arty and a bit theatrical, even before there was a named genre to put everything in. But, in the early days there were a very distinct tongue-in-cheek element to it that got lost somewhere along the way. Nowadays the term goth has been hijacked by symphonic metal bands that definitely don\'t have any humouristic levels in their music. But there still are people around who stick to the old ways! :D Even though such bands get lost in the flood of vampiric, sado-masochistic, pretentious poseuer bands that dominate the scene.

Oooooh, they\'ve got a name, have they? Sorry, I was running away a bit too fast to catch it. But you\'ve quantified the situation quite perfectly. It used to be fun to be a goth, dark and melancholy it might\'ve been. Then the obsessions with death, vampires and sadomasochism set in. A bit like The Addam\'s Family hijacked by Dracula and the Marquis de Sade.

Do yourself a favour, and look out for a band called Gossamer. Old school stuff, and they\'ve done some production with Wayne Hussey too. :D

the music mainstream never managed to grab me when i was young.

pop can kiss my arse.

in the eighties i was listening to the likes of the scorpions, warlock, iron maiden and metalica.
i have a more varied pallette nowadays, but rock stills flows in my veins.

some of the new wave bands were at least doing their own thing, most were just people jumping on the band wagon.
a bit like emos realy, at least goths have some talent for poetry.

It\'s not so much vampires, death, S/M and that sort of stuff in itself that bothers me. It\'s the lack of humour and distance to it that I can\'t stand. People who take themselves so god damn seriously! (And how can you, even, if you\'re rambling on about vampires? ???)

With the exception of Devo, I don\'t think any of them are New Wave. New Wave was tagged on to the 76/77 Punk scene and were generally a lot edgier than the bands listed.

If you had listed the Clash, Buzzcocks, Jam etc or from the US Suicide, Ramones etc.

What about Duran Duran? I think of New Wave, I think of them, and Gary Newman\'s \"Cars\" song...

Now I\'ve got the Human League\'s \"Don\'t You Want Me\" playing in my head.....

These bands usually fall under the \"New Romantic\" label. ;) Yet another stupid genre name... but it has survived and become an \"accepted\" term.
