Best New Wave Band

@lono & Ritual - The first half of Playing the Angel is definitely some of the best stuff DM has put out in awhile. I am currently listening to the Remix album released not long ago - great stuff! Also, I agree Sisters of Mercy are more Goth. This is getting too complicated.

@ Neil H - I think I was in preschool when your \"New Wave\" groups were big. The Clash and Ramones are great, but if they are the true \"New Wave\", what should the groups in the poll be labelled as? We called them New Wave in high school, but maybe there is a better term.

If you\'re anal about genre labels then a lot of the bands in your list would fall in different genres. But it\'s also difficult to label some bands since they\'ve been doing different music throughout their carreer. The Cure, for instance, were indeed New Wave when they started, then drifted closer to goth (although they were never really a goth band), then started doing some weird avant-garde pop music and then some less avant-garde pop music. :)

I must say I\'m very torn about labelling music. On one hand, it\'s stupid and lots of music fall outside of the frames, thus demanding new genre names to be invented. But, on the other hand, as someone who is very interested in music, I need a system to bring some order to it all.

Usually anything with lots of synthesizer is what I would call New Wave, but you\'re right Ritual, one man NW is another\'s goth or rock. On this list I would go with New Order, who nobody could mistake as goth - I hope.

I always thought all these genre labels were just thought up by the Grammys to find a way to give out an award to EVERYONE who put out a song in the last year. \"And now, to present the award for the best new funk/glam/country/goth/ska song of the year, here\'s last years recipient of the best rap/emo/classical/spoken word producer award...\"

I always thought the Ramone\'s were New Wave [shrug]. Of those in the poll, I\'d probably go with either the Cure or Talking Heads.

Well, if you agree with Wikipedia\'s definition:

New Wave is a term that has been used to describe many developments in music, but is most commonly associated with a movement in Western popular music, in the late 1970s and early 1980s inspired by the punk rock movement. New Wave music was initially marketed as a more commercial or chart-friendly version of punk. The style was often mixed with other genres, such as Funk, Disco, Reggae and Ska.

Then, in my opinion, there\'s no greater New Wave band than The Police.

Kraftwerk weren\'t New Wave.

I vote for them. Definitely the most influential out of that lot.

And Cabaret Voltaire. Blinding.

Vince Clarke is a legend. Shame he had to go and become Erasure....

@Spacemunkie - You are right about Kraftwerk, much more \"electronica\" than the others in the list. Cabaret Voltaire is another great one. Did you notice that Ferris Bueller had a Cabaret Voltaire poster up in his room in the movie? Just a fun bit of useless trivia.

How about Section 25? Secession? Art of Noise? Just a few more genre-benders.

Depeche Mode with The Cure a close second.

Streching New Wave a bit to include Dark Wave the best band imho (and overall my personal favorite band) is Deine Lakaien.

I was going to say The Wurzels at first, but then I realised you had written Country-Western not West-Country Band lol

I\'ve got myself a brand new combine harvester...

@ reverend - Not sure what West-Country Music sounds like, but if it is representative of the rest of the Cardiff area, I bet I would like it.

There is a program called \"Passport to Europe\" on our Travel Channel, and they recently went to Cardiff and some of the nearby attractions. It looks like a great place! I definitely want to try some of the pasties - they look very tasty.

Sadly not a Cardiff band, but titans of music they still be. West Country signifies the southwest of England that kind of wraps around the bottom part of Wales. A nice place it is too.
