Hi guys, I\'ve looked around alot and have seen many different things from nail polish remover to brake fluid and simple green but was wondering what is the best thing to remove paints from PLASTICS. I recently tried non-acetone nail polish remover and it sogged my minis :(.

I purchased a gallon jug of Simple Green from a local neighborhood hardware store for a great bargin (around $14, IIRC) and stripped 60 plastic ork boyz at once. Took a couple of days but it worked well. I used a palstic bristled brush (for cleaning dentures) to remove the paint with out affecting the plastic.

That\'s my story and Im\' sticking to it.

How long did you leave them in there before you cleaned them with the brush? and any other details that I need to know? I have about the same amount 60 platic space marine models that look like they have 2 layers of paint (primer and sloppy gray) I got them for a good price so hopefully I can stip them good, any advice with the simple green? Thanks

You could also try oven cleaner, far as I know that\'s safe to use on plastics and it strips paint nicely - spray on, leave to soak (couple of hours if necessary) and then scrub off carefully under running water, maybe using an old toothbrush.

Mine sounds like they might have come from the same deal. lol

I left them for two-three days. I would check them every couple of hours (more like once in the morning and once at night), test scrub one or two under running water to see how much had softened. I think about three days did it.

As a side note though, let them sit and completely dry a day or two - if I remember right, the plastic was a little soft after the long soak, nothing that the brush would destroy, and letting \"dry\" or sit out seemed to return them to their original hardness.

Two more questions:
-Can you name the active stuff in Simple Green, for us over here who can\'t get their mitts on the stuff?
-Same for Brake fluid, that\'s safe on plastics too, right?

Thanks

I\'ve had them sitting in the concetrated simple green now for over a week and although they haven\'t damaged any mini, it is taking ALOT longer than I expected lol and the scrubbing with a toothbruth for hours is getting tedious. The dude who I got them from must have had 6 coats of paint on these things :p :cussing:

heavily diluted Pine-Sol.

nd don\'t leave anything in it overnight that you want to keep!

was about the only thing that worked for getting paint off a chaos army i had.

over cleanr foamed up real nice and over night it removed NO paint wiht a hard bristled toothbrush.

super-glue gel remover removed the plastic as well.

a ultra-sonic bath helped to release some paint in cracks and crevices with just some water and baking soda.

don\'t know what i did with that little jewelry cleaning thing but wish i knew right now.

Nope It\'s disinfectant. You can usually smell it\'s distinctive odour in Hospital corridors.
Easy to get hold of in the UK, does the job cleaning mini\'s and doesn\'t get the missus too upset about mess. Having said that she\'s the one who developed the best techniques for stripping mini\'s in my house.

Yeah have to say Dettol works wonders I striped a batch of miniatures that was painted 20 odd years ago with no problems.

One or 2 needed a second dunk but seeing as the paint was old thats to be expected.Get a few cheap tooth brushes,I use 3 one for the first cleaning as it gets caked with paint then second to clean most of the rest off and third for a finale clean.

I use Easy-Off oven cleaner. I let it sit overnight usually. Most of the time it does a good job. I\'ve listed my process below:

1. Spray models thuroughly in a well vented area
2. Let is and soak over night
3.Spray models again next day (too loosen dried Easy-Off
4. Let models sit 30 - 60 min
5. Brush under running water with stiff bristle toothbrush
6. use sculpting tool or dental pick to get the nooks and crannies.

Ocassionally this will warp a base or two but that is the most distortion i\'ve seen. Also occassionally the models get etched slightly by the chemical, but nothing that is noticeable after painting.

Hope this helps.

:D
