best picture manipulation program???

Smile pretty everyone!:D

I finally got a new camera - it is a 5.1 megapixel cam and I love it! I am using iZone to organize my pictures, and microsoft office picture manager to correct any tint problems (not many) or to crop, but I really want to get a great photo editing program,

I\'ve heard about photoshop 7, and cs, which one is better? is there others out there that are better?????:duh:

I work in imaging and if money is no object, PhotoShop (virtually any version) is the most extensive and heavy duty program out there, but there is a learning curve to overcome. There are pobably sheaper ways to acheive the results but I have to have it for the work I do so I don\'t have to compromise... OOPS did that sound elitist? Hell, I just love what I do!:cool:

money is an object, my husband often objects to my spending it:p but time isn\'t, so I can wait a bit and save... Which one works with windows xp? does it matter? is one better with quality prints?

I also have a version of Photoshop here at work, and I must say it\'s the best image manipulation software I\'ve ever used, but it is very hard to master.

I\'m a photo retoucher and work in photoshop all day long. Version CS (which is basically photoshop 8) is the latest version. The learning curve really isn\'t that bad, there is a lot of software out there that is a lot deeper. Anything from version 5 is good though, the steps from 5 to 8 haven\'t been huge. Remember to sharpen up digital pics (unsharp mark from the pull down menu) as they nearly always need it. Amount 100, radius 1.0, and threshold 0 normally does the trick. Other that that auto levels and auto colour (again from the pull down) is also very handy.

I have the 6.0 version and I can\'t seem to find that \'sharpen\' option. Not available in 6.0?

I am just too thick....and lazy...

I have CS but I will never use 99% of it. I keep defaulting back to Photoshop Elements which is a \'cut down\' version and does everything I am likely to need for a fraction of the price of CS:D

Get it on eBay for even less...

I got 5.0 which I use for color balancing stuff. And I use Irfanview(free.. just google) for image resizing and creating panoramic views. There\'s an article on that by GunjiNoKanrei in the articles section ;)

A truly magnificent feature of CS useful for pictures taken with poor light (as well as overexposed images) is Shadow/Highlight in the Image menu (Image > Adjustments > Shadow/Highlight)

It brings out the shaded areas -- something quite common on miniature photos -- without affecting the lighter areas.

you don\'t need anything mor ethan elements for your minipic editing really...I mean, unless you want to cheat and use filters to soften the image, change the hue etc etc(unfortunately something that too many people seem to find necesarry. I refuse to use any filers on my images apart from auto colour balance sometimes. it\'s all pure camera work most of the time, with a little crop and paste)

cool! thanks! If I can be patient long enough, I might go for the cs, ya never know! I\'ve taken probably 500 or more pics this past two weeks - love my camera :flip::bouncy::flip: and want to make the most of it! My neighbor already asked for prints of some of her flowers, said she\'d even buy the photopaper...:cool: My dentist is looking for new prints for the office... hmmm I wonder...:idea:lollol

my camera has that feature!:wow:

Mini\'s are a small part of what I\'d be doing, and I agree with t-haye, I don\'t feel right about changing the image for cool mini, but for those poster shots... My hubby wants some more \"artistic\" sci-fi type pics of our stuff.

I totally agree, but sometimes you do need some basic photo correction if the camera work was not close to perfection. The shadow highlight thing I was talking about it, basically, about THIS

and it has nothing to do with filters or cheating :)

Well, I once took an unpainted I-Kore mini\'s picture from a website, and painted it with photoshop. Then I left it in my gallery for 2 weeks to let people vote on it before removing it.

It was at a nice 7.0 with, IIRC, 30-40 votes ; only one person had PM\'ed me to say that he suspected I had cheated. :D

See if you can\'t get a demo version or something. I had a magazine with a free 30 day trial of elements. I tried it and realised that I didn\'t need cs at all. When they say it\'s a cut down version of photoshop, they really mean about 10% of the most rarely used features have been removed. cs is about $600, elements is about $60:D

If I can find the magazine disk I can even send it to you if it would help;)
