best way to create showpiece bases as such? (Martin Footit\'s versions)

Anyone have tips on creating bases as such?

or his latest, grey knight at UK GD 2007?

I\'m wondering if the flat areas are plasticard and the rest is some type of clay? carved with the gaps/shapes as needed?

Any ideas?

(i\'ve heard MR. F on cmon is Martin..is that true?)

It\'s possibly extruded polystyrene, that dense blue or pink foam stuff. To make a smooth surface on that you could use wood filler and sand it, or indeed put platicard on top. You can carve it to make the rocks. Another sculpting material is balsa foam which come in a variety of densities.

Of course the best way to make bases like Martin Footit\'s is to get him to make them.

Martin Footit uses Wood putty and imprints real rocks on it for the texture.

Seb Perbet was in a WD article and it mentions wood putty; but I guess Martin may use it as well.

ROCK wise, almost all putty\'s and clay come out well if you use real rocks to texture them...

There\'s a company called Woodland Scenics that make different rock molds I use for my model trains. They\'re very easy to use and there are several molds available. They carry everything you need to make your own.

personally I think it looks like Mr. F has used wood putty aswell, my guess on the stair and the platform is polystyrene and plasticcard... I might be very wrong though.. it\'s just a guess..

Hi, on the high elf\'s base the rocks around the edge were done with wood putty over a foam former. Scraped them when it was dry to add more texture & change some areas to get the shape I wanted & as well as stop the repeat of the same texture that you get from using one rock to imprint onto the wood putty.

As for the elfy stone work I used \'uriel\' -not sure of proper spelling or if thats its official name. I\'ve been told its a wood/resin combo which I think makes it a fancy mdf? We use it at work (GW) Its really good for scraping & sanding & we get it in handy sheets of varying thickness.
I mostly used the stuff on the grey knights base this year as well as a few bits of plasticard, brass rod, bit of greenstuff & one plastic component for the details.
