would it be to buy a cam with more megapixels or buy a higher quality slr cam?
iv got a olympus sp-350 8.3mp, and iv had it for a fair few year now, its a very good camera, but iv been considering replacing it to get better pictures of my minis (and in general) so wot would i be better off going for? noobing the mps or a quality slr?

All the best john

To be honest with you I think the camera you have now is more than good enough.

In my experience I have found that what matters most is the lighting and background you use as well as how steady you can keep the camera. So I would suggest instead of blowing tons of cash on a new camera, buy yourself some decent lighting, a light tent and a tripod if you\'ve not got those already.

Of course if you are in the \"I need a new expensive toy\" mood then I would recommend the SLR with a good macro lens. Also if you plan on using zoom while taking photos of your minis, buy a camera that has a good optical zoom instead of digital.

John to be honest I don\'t think you need to upgrade.
Having seen the bust in person I know that your picture in your gallery isn\'t entirely accurate.
SO:-
JohnCombined.jpg

The right hand image was tweaked very slightly in Photoshop.
First I captured the bust and ignored the background.
Then I went to Images> Adjustments> Levels and pulled the median pointer left along the histogram which darkened the image very slightly.
Saved that.
The went Images> Adjustments> Brightness/Contrast and increased the contrast by 10.

Now for me to do this simply took 10 minutes, but I\'d suggest that there are \"in Camera\" adjustments, such as the contrast which may need tweaking.

Don\'t buy into the megapixel race! It\'s marketing bullshit. That said, any DSLR will knock almost all P&S into a cocked hat.

For web sized pics, the quality of that Olympus looks spot on to me. If you want a new toy check out the Olympus EP-1. World\'s smallest DSLR....

Use a neutral grey background. Use macro setting on camera. If possible use two lamps positioned on each side of the mini at a 45 degree angle to stop shadows. Manually set the white balance to get the colors correct.

John, without knowing your camera I\'d say it\'s very likely more than good enough for this. Certainly there\'s enough resolution, you can get good shots with a 3MP camera, same as a 12! Even if the camera doesn\'t allow you to get as close as you\'d like for shots of minis, with 8MP, you can shoot at max resolution and then crop down (\"post-photo zooming\") and still have an image that\'s many times the size you need for posting online.

In terms of improving your shots, I agree with the first post above - lighting and tripod are THE things that make the difference between results that are bleh and good. If we take it that professional product photography is the gold standard to which we should aspire, lots of diffuse light is one of the key aspects of the way those are shot and the results speak for themselves.

Then get the white balance right - not necessarily a custom, if a preset gives better colour then don\'t be afraid to use it! - and you\'re 90% of the way there.

Try to use the slowest ISO rating the camera has, while also using the smallest aperture (hence the need for plenty of light).

After the shot is taken then it\'s Photoshop or the GIMP\'s turn at the plate; you can do a lot to improve a not-quite-there shot but the better the photo is to begin with the better the results. Many threads have pointers on the basics and what you should routinely use is partly based on what software you\'re using, but the simplest is a bit of Levels, with maybe a bit of Brightness/Contrast, then you reduce to final size and sharpen (using Smart Sharpen or Unsharp Mask, or just reduce using Bicubic Sharper).

If you have a reasonably fast machine, and the photo is as good as it can be beforehand, tweaks in PS shouldn\'t take more than a minute for each image.

OOOoo! shiny shiny! :D

tbh i have actually been considering a new camera for the best part of the year, but whenever i sit down and start lookin at specs and prices, its not worth it because i actually have a pretty decent camera, but as mike and einion have pointed out iv till got some ps skills to master. Ambiorix looks so much better with a little bit of contrast. i actually do think iv got a decent setup iv got a tripod, powerful lights and a light tent, i just feel that most of my pics lack depth and contrast.
Iv got the wamp fatal personalities comp to enter 2day, so am goin to spend a few hrs playin about with the pic iv got of her, ill post a few up here for some feedback, cheers guys!

The ole mega pixel race is only woth chasing if you want to personally print out large pictures of your mini. If it\'s being uploaded onto CMoN then it really doesn\'t matter as it has to be shrunk so much to be 600 pixels wide.
Personally I use a Canon Powershot A40 - 2 MP which is 7 years old. You cant even buy 2 MP cameras these dayslol

I also have the Canon SLR 400D. To be honest they both give me the same picture when viewed on screen. If anything the Powershot is slightly better for mini pics. Otherwise the only difference for figures is if I want to print the pictures out.

I agree with the others - the set up of the pic can be more mportant than the camera taking the pic. As long as the camera has a good lens and a good macro setting then it should do the job.

Most of the pics I take are not tweaked, maybe the odd bit of contrast needs adjusting but by and large they are as I took them.

WOW

Camera and photography aside....can I just say that that bust is asskicking ?

Some of the best eyes I\'ve ever seen.

Nice job on the Photoshop, DR. It really does the bust some justice.

I use this camera Fujifilm Finepix F30

And In my opinion, I just dont seem to get good results with it, and it did come highly recommended.

Maybe its something to do with my setup?

I am going to invest in some different lights, but not too sure what else I can do?

Maybe I need to change the camera settings, or also change the camera?

get rid of that silver light shining onto the mini. Ruins all the indirect soft light you\'ve got going with the light box.

Use a mini tripod for the camera. Set it for the longest opening possible (1/4 or 1/2 second if you can). Set the camera for delayed pic. Turn the room lights off. Then stand back and don\'t bump the table.

If you can set the light metering to only get the mini and not the background, you\'ll be ahead as well.
