Big or small?

Which size of picture is better for submission. The larger picture shows significantly more detail but maybe too much?

I suppose if I had painted it perfectly then the larger image would be the better one to use. However, since I didn\'t then maybe the smaller one will bring a higher score? I\'m doing this as a test and it may determine the size of my pictures in future.

Also since the original didn\'t bring any comments I\'d appreciate some. I can\'t improve if I don\'t know what I\'m doing wrong.

I like the bigger one too, except it appears a bit pixillated. It shows the work on the metals much better.
Looks like you took the pic at the smaller size and enlarged it. Is that the case? Can you take a larger pic?
If not, if you took it as a jpeg, save it as a .tff file, then resize the .tff, then save as .jpg - you save more detail that way.

You\'re right, it is pixellated and I don\'t have a clue as to why. The larger picture was not enlarged at all. In fact it is smaller than the original size. Here is the original:

The only reason I can think of why it is pixellated is because the front and back were pasted together and saved that way?

I saw theses whilst doing my usual voting and voted the same for them. Sorry I didnt comment but I do look at 100 minis or so a day.

Anyway this is what I think you need to do to improve.

1. Do better base coats. Some of you areas arent convered properly. Thin your paint and do more coats. It may take 4 or 5 to get a smooth base coat.

2. You have shaded but not highlighted. More high lights will help.

3. The blade isnt shaded on the edge.

Its a well painted mini just needs some tidying up. Color selection is good. Voted on both.

I have been thinning, maybe not enough though. What is a good ratio to use? Most of the time I use VGC and thin it 1:1. Is that still too thick?

Even with that ratio it still takes me 3-4 coats.

You\'re right about highlighting, I did none. I don\'t feel quite ready for that yet. I need to read up on it more first.

Nope, don\'t read it, just try it :)

Honestly, reading is no experience. Theory is nonsense. Just go for it and mix a slightly lighter colour and put it on a raised area. Then do it again with some lighter paint. And again....and try it on a textured area first just to get the feel for it, like a beard. Then try to highlight a small area like the face, because even large transitions look good in a small space, leaving room for experimenting and error. Get a feel for it, The best way.
