Bizarre Foods

When we went to scout camp stuff with other troops (is it troops? I can\'t remember) We used to just stick to ourselves and cook our own food, as the other troop leaders cooking the food were \'less than hygenic\' to put it that way.

Luckily we were all taught to cook off our troop leaders, and would often (well always really) win the cooking competiton that was held once a year. We were damn fine scouts. lol

I eat paint!!!

Wait, that\'s not odd for people here... lol

Edit: forgot to mention \"Filiberto\'s\" mexican food. At these little joints you can get a buritto the size of your head for about $3. That explains why they were busted once by a health inspector for using \"alternative meats\". (aka dog found in freezer).

Battered marsbar!

Ah good old battered marsbars/bananas (as well as burgers, pizza, haggis, white pudding, black pudding.... eh.. most things in Scotland can be battered lol)

Reminds me of a treat I had as a lad. Banana, Crisp and Mars Bar sandwiches odd time with Nutella as well. There\'s a nice load of carbs for you (bloody delicious though). :)

Its odd how some \'gross\' things are normal if you grow up with them.

Things I\'ve had that were, at least initially, unusual are:

Snails in France, tasted like garlic, tasty!
Witchity (sp?) grubs in Australia, pretty good, also crocodile, rather bland and kangeroo, tasty.
Haggis in Scotland, various bits of animal in a sheeps stomach, tasty.

Things I grew up with so not unusual to me but might be depending upon where you are from: black (blood) pudding, dripping (beef fat) on toast, kidneys and liver, tripe, spinal cord (that white bit in lamb chops that you probably can\'t get anymore with all the BSE panic).

The great thing about Australia is that we eat our national emblem. I have tried bith Kangaroo and emu. I also tried Witchity grubs but refused to eat them raw so mine where cooked.

Seconded, the only problem with haggis is that you cant get any up here in Finland so you\'ll have to make it yourself (done it once). Boiling the lungs was nasty as the impurities as \"distilled\" out of the lungs through the windpipe.

Scandinavians and Finns do have some strange foods. Lutfisk is made by soaking cod in lye or potash for 3-7 days (enough for it to soften and the proteins start to break, but not enough for the fats to saponify i.e. turn into soap). The smell of cooking lutfisk is really bad, but its a traditional Xmas food.

Blood as an ingredient is used in Finland in pancakes as well as sausages and something similar to black pudding.

I had elk in Norway, pretty nice! Also, something not very unusual that I REALLY like - squid. Fantastic stuff. Octopus is not quite as nice, but still :D

Our regional favourite (supposedly) is laverbread and bacon and cockles. Laverbread is the edible seweed malarkey, and when cooked in bacon fat and served with said bacon and cockles, it makes a grand breakfast. Throw a poached egg on it too!

I like the West Country (of England) for their faggots. Can\'t beat faggots!

Can\'t think of aything odd back home bar spuds with everything, I guess one could throw in Poteen as an odd drink, likely to makes the hairs on your chest fall out rather than grow some that stuff. lol

I didn\'t know there was such an odd variety of foods up in Scandanavia though, fermented herring sounds like it would have me running for the toilet just from the smell, urgh.

Haggis is an excellent choice of food and is actually quite healthy when you concider that the average Glaswiegen lives off Whiskey and deep fried mars bars and deep fried pizza or anything else the chip shop will deep fry for them :D

As for Poteen - well it depends on who is brewing it and can be leathal even in small doses a bad batch can send you blind.

Reverend, if you are ever in Newport pop into the market there is a great little stall there that does an excellent dish of faggots and peas :D I think the stall is on the upstairs level :D

I think the \"oddest\" thing I remember eating was donkey sausage. By that I mean a sausage made out of donkey meat and NOT an actual donkey\'s... well, you know what I mean ;)

Living by the sea I\'ve tried the full range of things that crawl/slither out of it including whelks, winkles, cockles and other humourously named snail relatives. :|~

Aye pretty much, just Irish! Some of the commerical versions are rather strong as well, there\'s a 90% (180 proof) one floating around, think it\'s on the way out as the EU isn\'t allowing anything over 80%. *laughs*

Not much a fan of it anyway, it is an odd one though. ;)

Ha! I will trump you all with this selection of bizarre and gross Icelandic food´s:

Fermented skate

shark

Fermented/rotted shark

femented sheep´s balls

sheeps balls sheep´s heads w everything eye´s etc.

Plokkfish

Blood pudding (different here in Iceland hard to describe.

The Fermented/ rotted shark meat is put in a hole and pissed upon and then the rest ofthe eath is put on top and it is left there for 2-3 month´s VERY healthy I´m told:possessed:

Squig, it sounds like what they do here with most game birds such as pheasant, they hang it and let the maggots set in first before cooking it...

In Bulgaria I ate \"Plöckwürst\" once. I have no idea what it was. I\'m pretty sure it was something that was supposed to sound German... it was a really thin sausage made out of completely unidenfiable meat that made a combination pop/crunch sound with every bite and seemed to liquify in my mouth as soon as it hit my tongue.
Seriously, that stuff was nasty.

I have also eaten shark and liked it.

I\'d actually quite like to go to Iceland to try puffin. I saw a really cool photo of an Icelandic puffin-hunter in a magazine. They look so colourful and tasty :D
